The 43-year-old Toronto Argonauts quarterback and local resident became professional football's all-time passing yardage leader Monday at Ivor Wynne Stadium in Hamilton, flipping a shovel pass to teammate Arland Bruce III that turned into a 29-yard touchdown completion. The pass gave Allen a career total of 70,565 passing yards (a number he improved to 70,596 by the end of the game), eclipsing Warren Moon's previous standard of 70,553. The game was halted as Allen was honoured at midfield for his accomplishment, being formally presented with the game ball by CFL commissioner Tom Wright while many, including Allen's college quarterback coach, looked on. "Words cannot describe how proud I am of Damon," said Steve Mariucci, who coached Allen at Cal State Fullerton before going on to become the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions. "This is truly remarkable. Having been Damon's coach when he was an 18-year-old, 139-pound kid from San Diego, I can say he always pursued the game with a great deal of determination and a great love and respect for football. After 22 years of pro football excellence he continues to amaze us all." Argos coach Michael (Pinball) Clemons, also an Oakville resident, said he was in awe as he watched Allen being honoured. "I was emotional, I was full, I was happy," said Clemons. "It felt like I'd done it. It was one of the most amazing moments I've ever had during a football game." The Allen-to-Bruce connection gave the Argonauts a 12-3 lead. Toronto went on to rout the Tiger-Cats 40-6. The yardage record is only the latest achievement in Allen's illustrious career. He was the CFL's Most Outstanding Player in 2005, is a twotime Grey Cup MVP, has won the Grey Cup four times and owns CFL all-time records in passing touchdowns, pass attempts, pass completions and rushing yards by a quarterback. The Argos will recognize Allen's accomplishment Saturday at the Rogers Centre with a pre-game ceremony before they play Hamilton again. The ceremony will include Allen's brother and Pro Football Hall of Famer Marcus Allen, Moon and many other special guests. Damon Allen's grandson, Justice, will handle kickoff duties while his youngest daughter, Ateya, will hold the ball.
