Artscene Oakville Beaver · WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 2006 By Krissie Rutherford OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF www.oakvillebeaver.com 36 Perfect Wedding is `door-slamming, sexy romp' Identity mix-ups, cheating, lying, coverups and comedy are at the centre of the first play of the Oakville Drama Series' 2006/2007 season, which opens tomorrow night. Or, as actress Alison Preece puts it, Perfect Wedding is "a door-slamming, mistaken identity, sexy romp." Written by renowned Canadian playwright Robin Hawdon, it's about a groom who wakes up in his bridal suite the morning after his bachelor party which is also the morning of his wedding beside a naked woman (played by Preece) he doesn't remember meeting the night before. "He has no idea who she is, but he's very attracted to her, and her to him," said director of the West End Studio Theatre (W.E.S.T.) production, Yo Mustafa. "The best man comes in, he's hung-over, and it's just gets ridiculous after that. They start lying and they don't know when to stop." While the woman is in the bathroom getting dressed, the groom, (played by Mauricio Canjura), makes his best man pretend she's his girlfriend to hide her from his "It just starts and does not stop. It's crazy. It's a fun play," said Mustafa, smiling. "I read the script and just loved it." Danny Deakin, who plays the best man, says Perfect Wedding is unlike most plays. "It's really well-written, and the script actually jumped out at me," said the 23year-old Sheridan College student. "It's more like an episode of Friends than a play. It's a lot of fun." Amidst the lying and cover-ups is the moral voice of the production, Julie the chambermaid. Played by Franny McCabeBennett, Julie enters the groom's hotel room to clean up and consequently gets involved in the action. "I end up getting suckered into this mixup," said McCabe-Bennett, 20, a Guelph University theatre major. "Julie's just trying to be a nice person and it gets all crazy and blown out of proportion. "It doesn't go very well for her in the end," she added, smiling. While McCabe-Bennett admits the play is "a farce," she says Perfect Wedding is more than just a comedy. "It really will strike every emotion. You get to feel a lot, but have a lot of fun at the same time." BARRIE ERSKINE / OAKVILLE BEAVER PERFECT COMEDY: The lies, cover-ups and cheating has been exposed in Perfect Wedding as best man Tom (Danny Deakin) strangles groom-to-be, Bill (Mauricio Canjura). Left, Julie the chambermaid tries to get everyone under control by blowing a whistle while bride-to-be, Rachel (Jennifer Farrugia) tries to pull the best man off her fiancé. Her mother (Dina Dametto) watches the action unfold and Julie (Alison Preece), who's also involved in the mix-up and scandals, tries to stop the fighting.West End Studio Theatre's Production of Perfect Wedding opens tomorrow at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts. fiancé, who's on her way to the hotel. Meanwhile, the best man's actual girlfriend is expected to show up any minute. The chambermaid gets involved in the mix-up, the bride-to-be enters the picture and that's when the action really starts.
