www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday September 6, 2006 - 15 Tears changed to anger at diagnosis Continued from page 13 She had cancer all right - three different kinds. From then on, she has been told she is unique. Cancer is not a new word to the Davis family. It has been part of our nucleus for years. My father, Stan Davis, has successfully fought lung cancer. He has been living with prostate cancer for 10 years. And that is what you do live with cancer. When mom was handed the diagnosis she cried streams of tears and then got mad. Her favourite (ironically) pink pillow on a livingroom chair is now misshapen thanks to her small fist giving it a good beating. When I heard the news I went cold, felt nauseous and hoped I could provide my mother with all the positive energy she was going to need. Crying was not an option she needed laughter and sunshine only. As I write this, mom has just wrapped Day 6 of 25 radiation treat- ments at Credit Valley Hospital. We mark off the days with glee. I realize that The Weekend to End Breast Cancer is to benefit Princess Margaret Hospital but I would be remiss if I did not offer my deepest thanks to the men and women who are currently an integral part of my mother's care package. They put that smile back on her face. They make her feel good, even when her spirits may be waning. Say what you want about our health care system, but these profes- sionals are unbelievably compassionate and dedicated. If you know someone who is participating in The Weekend to End Breast Cancer make sure you donate to the cause and offer your support. If you are one of the participants who, like Julia Hanna, will put their life on hold this weekend, thanks for bettering the lives of others. And to you Julia, thank you for putting a smile on the face of your honouree.
