www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday September 6, 2006 - 13 Weekend of hope Continued from page 12 "It's a weekend of hope, as we honour lives lost, celebrate survivors, and help bring breast cancer care to those who so desperately need it," reads the official website for The Weekend to End Breast Cancer. "This extraordinary weekend is about finding the hero in yourself and discovering strength you never knew you had." Last year, there were 4,889 walkers who raised an astounding $16 million. Hanna is a member of a team organized by the Oakville-based Company of Women. They have dubbed themselves Chicks Out Walking. These women are among the thousands of Halton residents who have worked hard to raise the necessary funds for entry into the walk (a minimum of $2,000) per walker. While bringing in the dollars is obviously the driving force behind this growing event, there is another factor that Hanna takes into account. "Raising money is huge but as important, no, even more important, is the spiritual benefit in getting these women together," explained Hanna. "They are coming together for the same thing." This dynamo is very familiar with the affects of cancer. She is currently assisting some close friends who have the illness. "It (breast cancer) tires your spirit, tires your heart and tires your emotion," she said. "It makes you weary." While Hanna will be accompanied by her teammates on this 60-km. journey, she will also have someone else giving her that extra push when her feet start to ache. It's her honouree the person to whom she is dedicating her journey. Her name is Joan Davis my mother a long-time Bronte resident who, this past spring was handed the devastating news that she, too, has breast cancer. Even though several biopsies were negative, so convinced was her family doctor and surgeon that the mammogram was painting a far different picture, my brave, sweet mom underwent surgery not knowing if she was going to have a mastectomy or lumpectomy or if indeed she had cancer. When she awoke from the anesthetic she discovered one breast gone and a sizeable amount of tissue removed from the other. As is customary, numerous lymph nodes were taken out. Consumers aren't the only ones who pay when fraudsters steal credit card numbers and other cardholder data. Preventing credit and debit card fraud remains a challenge for many business owners and store managers who struggle to keep a watchful eye over their premises. Educating staff on how to prevent fraud at the point-of-sale (POS) is one step merchants can take to protect their customers' privacy. Here are some - News Canada fraud prevention tips: · Be well acquainted with your employees. Check references and SIN numbers to establish the full identity of every employee, especially for staff members frequently left alone or in charge of the POS. · Educate employees on how to report a potential fraud incidence or a payment terminal malfunction to the payment-processing provider. · Memorize the appearance of the payment terminal and its surroundings so that any changes will be noticed and quickly reported. · Establish a relationship with all suppliers or support staff that may provide services after hours and keep records of their schedules. · Alert staff of suspicious customer behaviour; such as customers grabbing merchandise and purchasing at random, or customers with signatures that do not match the signature on their credit card. · Check security features each time a debit or credit card is presented for payment. Protecting customer data is a top priority for merchants, and engaging store employees is the first step in the process of making this happen.
