Is it proper job search etiquette? : Most of us have real difficulty telling other people about how good we are. We consider it bad form, impolite and evidence of a conceited and self-absorbed personality. That may be true in other situations, but the interview is an exception. Here your success lies in your ability to communicate your strengths and the belief that you are probably a better candidate than the others, while not sounding stricken with delusions of grandeur. Find the right way to express your strengths in a positive and forthright manner. Done well, it demonstrates confidence, not conceit. You want to help the employer share in your enthusiasm! Q A A healthy balanced diet is very important for growing kids. While it is important to have a good mix of fruits, vegetables, milk, cereals and breads in their lunches, some of the ones you may choose can contain sugars and starches that feed the bacteria in their mouths. They produce the acids that attack the tooth enamel causing cavities. Since kids don't generally brush their teeth at school there is greater potential for decay to start as the acid attack can last upwards to twenty minutes. Sticky foods like raisins and granola bars can stick to teeth longer and are difficult for saliva to wash away. Raw vegetables and cheeses make better snacks. Check labels on prepared foods too, you'll be surprised how much sugar is added to some foods. Another important consideration for back to school are your children's extracurricular activities. Sports like football can result in injuries that could be minimized or prevented by dental sport mouthguards. Of course it is also important to have a back to school check up. A painful tooth or chronic dental problem can lead to difficulty eating, speaking and concentrating. And children do not always tell parents and may seem anxious, depressed or tired and not be recognized as dental problems by a teacher. Great things start with a warm healthy smile! The reason 98% of the population is taking some form of supplementation whether it be vitamin, mineral or herbal, is because we are not getting the proper quantity or quality of nutrients from our current diet. Our soil has been stripped of essential vitamins and minerals, even the best of diets can be lacking in key ingredients. Supplementation will help to combat the negative effects of the factors that we can't always control like soil quality, genetic factors, air quality and pollution, as well as some we can control: stress and a busy lifestyle which can lead to poor nutrition and the consumption of fast foods. Herbal Magic's goal is to bring the body back into balance by teaching healthy lifestyles through diet, nutrition and proper supplementation. Our products are registered with the Natural Health Products Director (N.H.P.D.), a division of Health Canada, to ensure our clients are purchasing the highest quality supplements. Our scientific advisory team consists of a licensed Pharmacist and Naturopathic Dr.'s. They have created an extensive guide so we can cross reference all pharmaceutical drugs on the market, for all vitamin, mineral and herbal supplements we carry. Q: A: Why take supplements? Iabouttold this rosacea. What is rosacea and what can I do it? Rosacea is a very common disorder of the skin. Many members of the A: same family will have signs of rosacea. It is seen most often in fair skinned individuals and can range from simple redness of the cheeks to permanent blood vessels on the face. It can also manifest itself as swelling of the eyes, nose and cheeks combined with acne-like lesions. Some symptoms include redness and warmth of the face. Triggers for this redness or flushing can include heat, cold, wind, spicy foods, hot drinks, exercise, stress, nervousness and alcohol consumption. There is little evidence that rosacea is due to infection or infestation. Some people might mistake the redness for a sunburn or due to the drinking of alcohol and the red pimples for adult acne. Less commonly, you can see swelling of the nose, cheeks, chin and redness of the eyes, giving a bloodshot like appearance. Part of treating rosacea involves minimizing exposure to the triggers that are listed above. If this is not helpful at controlling the rosacea, then a number of therapies exist. Topical prescription formulations are the mainstay of treatment. These are usually used for many months to years and work by decreasing the inflammation of the skin. Oral antibiotics are other types of prescription medications that decrease the inflammation of the face. Both topical medications and oral antibiotics are very helpful in treating the raised, red lesions and mildly helpful for redness, flushing and the blood vessels of the face. For the redness of the face including the blood vessels and flushing, there are new, safe and very effective technologies such as lasers and intense pulsed light therapy. I suggest that before you consider laser or intense pulsed light treatment, you see your doctor or dermatologist for the most appropriate therapy. Is there a better type of backpack to buy?? I am sure this is very worrisome for all parents!! Can you give us a few tips? Dr. Channy Y. Muhn, MD, FRCPC Dermatologist/Dermatologic Surgeon Kids think its `cool' to strap on their backpack and head off to school. But if they don't know `the rules', wearing a backpack can definitely affect your child's health. Try these few tips for good health: ·Choose a pack that is light in weight (ie canvas or vinyl as opposed to leather). ·Ensure the pack weighs no more than 10-15% of the child's body weight once packed. ·The pack should never hang more than 4" below the waist. ·A backpack with individualized compartments helps position the contents most effectively. Make sure the weight is evenly distributed. ·Remember, bigger is not necessarily better. ·Ensure the backpack is worn utilizing both straps not just over one shoulder. ·Wide, padded straps are most important so as not to injure the shoulders. ·Shoulder straps should be adjusted so the pack can be fitted snugly to the child's body. ·The backpack should be packed so that pointy or bulky objects are away from the area which will rest on the child's back. ·Make sure the backpack contains only what is needed for that day. ·The above tips should help prevent needless back pain that backpack misuse can cause. ·However, should your child be experiencing any type of back pain whether backpack related or otherwise, remember Drs.of Chiropractic are trained to diagnose and treat patients of all ages and can assist in prescribing exercises to develop strong muscles along with instruction in good nutrition, posture and eating habits. Don't hesitate to call the office for a complimentary consult. Yours truly, Dr. Eric Dawtrey, DC Q: Is there any way of improving the color of my skin? I find that as I age, my skin looks dull, spotty and uneven. the color, tone and texture of your skin, but one of the most effective is a treatment called IPL or Intense Pulsed Light (also known as Photo-facial). Unlike a laser, which uses light in a specific wavelength, IPL uses a broad-spectrum light source enabling it to treat both brown and red hues in the skin. We can treat the face, neck and chest as well as the backs of the hands. We can also use a topical medication called "Levulan" which turbo-boosts the treatment. Without Levulan you would expect to have 3-5 treatments and with Levulan 2-3.
