Puppies live with their foster families until they are about one year of age before beginning their training as Dog Guides in one of three programs: Canine Vision Canada, Special Skills of Dogs Canada and Hearing Ear Dogs of Canada. Foster families raise the puppies, teach them manners and basic obedience and socialize them to as many social settings as possible. This includes taking the puppy shopping, to restaurants and riding public transit. Each foster family is invited to the graduation ceremony to see their foster puppy graduate as a Dog Guide with its new handler.
