It was around 2 p.m. when two men and five or six women entered the Howard Williams Jewellery Store located on Lakeshore Road and managed to distract the staff. After viewing a number of items, one of the men said he wanted to purchase a ring, but added he only had Euros as currency. The employees directed him to a neighbouring bank to convert his money and the group left, never to return. On Saturday, however, the theft was discovered after staff determined that numerous items of jewellery had been stolen from the back room of the store. Taken was a large quantity of raw diamonds and one ladies' 14kt dress ring with a .06-carat diamond. The loss is estimated at $40,000. Detective Greg Sullivan and investigators from the Oakville Criminal Investigations Bureau, Robbery Squad, are looking into the theft and believe the culprits are part of a known crime group. Police are aware of similar incidents that have occurred recently in York Region and in Cambridge. Anyone with information related to the matter is asked to contact the Oakville Investigations Division at 905-825-4777 or ext. 2218 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
