The theft happened on June 15 between 4-5 p.m. when someone entered the female locker room of Family Fitness located on 2021 Winston Park Dr. and broke into a locker. The victim's wallet, which included several credit cards, was stolen. Shortly after, a woman was at the Canadian Tire Store located at 2510 Hyde Park Gate and then made several purchases over the next few hours using the stolen credit cards. Halton fraud detectives released photos taken by security cameras at the Canadian Tire. The images were released to the public with an appeal for help in identifying and locating a person of interest. On June 16, a woman was arrested by police on an unrelated matter involving a stolen vehicle in Milton. According to Sgt. Peter Payne, Halton detectives have determined that the suspect was involved in the theft of credit cards and subsequent fraudulent transactions. Investigators have learned the suspect was involved in similar type thefts from fitness clubs not only in Halton, but also Peel and Waterloo regions. Bernadette Vera Sawyer, 47 of Kitchener faces charges including: possession of stolen property, break and enter to commit theft, fail to comply with bail undertaking, six counts of using a stolen credit card and three counts of failing to comply with a probation order.
