While Rachel Unitt and Fara Williams will suit up for England's women's team in the World Cup, the Storm doesn't have the benefit of having a Kara Lang, Deanna Matheson or Amanda Cicchini, three Oakville players who play "You can definitely tell they play for Canada. Park. "You can definitely tell they play together every day, the way Oakville Storm they keep shape, knowing their player Brea Griffiths offensive plays and checking to the ball," said Brea Griffiths, who produced the Storm's best scoring chance. "We play together once a week. We were working all day and got here 45 minutes before the game." Oakville had a strong start to the game with Griffiths firing a ball off the post nine minutes in. The Storm's Orianna Nierojewski got the rebound but she was thwarted by Everton defender Jayne Eadie. The Storm would eventually take control, producing numerous scoring chances over the final 30 minutes of the half. Everton's Michelle Evans booted a shot off the post and a minute later Unitt converted Amy Kane's corner kick into the game's first goal. Williams narrowly missed a highlight reel goal in the late going with a scissor kick that was just wide to the left. Storm keeper Jennifer Budd would keep her team in the game with a pair of diving saves in the final two minutes of the half. Budd continued her strong play in the second half, twice sliding out of the net to take away scoring opportunities. Eventually, though, Everton's patience in setting up its plays began paying off. Unitt scored her second of the game in the 62nd minute from a scramble in front set up by a corner kick and Williams made it 4-0 on a penalty kick in the 73rd minute. Six minutes later Michelle Hennigan put in Williams' rebound as the Storm failed to clear the ball. Kelly MacDougall would cap the Everton scoring spree in the 85th minute. "They did a good job of spreading us out and we were just chasing them around the field," Griffiths said. "We were running around like we'd had our heads cut off." Oakville took one last shot at ending keeper Danielle Hill's shutout bid in the final minutes. Lora Teboekhorst's strike appeared to be on its way in but Hill dove to deflect it wide. While Canadian leagues are in mid-season, Everton is using this four-game tour as a warm-up to their season, which runs from August to May. "This is my first time away with the team," said Parry, a member of the English Under-19 team. "We're going to Niagara Falls (Saturday). We're all getting on well, no fights, so that's always a bonus, isn't it." Parry said Canadian teams play a much more aggressive style. "They're a lot more physical," the 18-year-old said. "We're all little and they're all very tall. We're only a young side and they were knocking us around a bit." One player who has had plenty of exposure to the game in North America is Unitt, who played for the New Jersey Wildcats W-League championship team last season. "We get taught the technical side from an early age," she said. "I think here they concentrate on the speed and strength, the athletic, physical side." Prior to the game, young players had an opportunity to test their skills at the Play Soccer interactive area. Players received a card with a code and their results from the different skills centres were entered into a computer. Players could then check their results on the Play Soccer website. Nine-year-old Carling Goold, who plays on the Navy Blue Blasters, was enjoying the different skills tests but her favourite was the one measuring how hard players could kick the ball. "I like getting to see how much power I get for my kicks," said Goold, who booted the ball at 51 km/h. -- Herb Garbutt can be reached at sports@oakvillebeaver.com. Hi!
