www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday July 1, 2006 - 15 Police charge woman in credit card theft Halton police have laid charges after asking for the public's help identifying a woman who'd stolen credit cards from the Family Fitness gym in Oakville last week. The theft happened on June 15 between 4-5 p.m. when someone entered the female locker room of Family Fitness located on 2021 Winston Park Dr. and broke into a locker. The victim's wallet, which included several credit cards, was stolen. Shortly after, a woman was at the Canadian Tire Store located at 2510 Hyde Park Gate and then made several purchases over the next few hours using the stolen credit cards. Halton fraud detectives released photos taken by security cameras at the Canadian Tire. The images were released to the public with an appeal for help in identifying and locating a person of interest. On June 16, a woman was arrested by police on an unrelated matter involving a stolen vehicle in Milton. According to Sgt. Peter Payne, Halton detectives have determined that the suspect was involved in the theft of credit cards and subsequent fraudulent transactions. Investigators have learned the suspect was allegedly involved in similar type thefts from fitness clubs not only in Halton, but also Peel and Waterloo regions. Bernadette Vera Sawyer, 47, of Kitchener faces charges including: possession of stolen property, break and enter to commit theft, fail to comply with bail undertaking, six counts of using a stolen credit card and three counts of failing to comply with a probation order. Two more high-rise towers planned for Oak Park By Angela Blackburn OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Trade Welcome INVENTORY CLEARANCE SALE ON NOW ENDS JULY 31ST News of two more 12-storey apartment buildings in Oak Park -- at the northeast corner of Central Park Drive and Georgian Drive -- in the Uptown Core has raised little more than a whisper in the Uptown Core community. That's much different than the ruckus the first two buildings created in the community several years ago on Central Park Drive -- when Ward 5 Councillor Jeff Knoll said it was a full-time job just to keep up with all the correspondence and e-mails flying around. That dispute headed to the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) and the residents were forced to accept a decision that allowed the buildings. However, since that time, the arrival of the buildings, though not popular with immediate neighbours, has been a hit with others. Knoll drew attention to the difference in community reaction at Monday's Planning and Development Council meeting. The veteran councillor who himself lives in Oak Park, said he wasn't sure if the lack of reaction this time around was community acceptance or resignation after the OMB allowed the first high rises to go up despite the wide-scale community protest. Andrew Gray of Tribute Communities however was on hand Monday to say the first two towers were a "success story." Tribute is now ready to build more apartments -- in two 12storey towers -- in Oak Park. It would be bumping up the height Councillor Jeff Knoll limits from four and six storeys to the 12-storey maximum. It would bump the area density from a maximum of 185 units per site hectare to 220 units per site hectare. Gray said his firm is also hoping to build high rises on Speers Road between Dorval Drive and Kerr Street and do more business in Oakville, if negotiations now underway pan out. According to the Tribute statistics presented last week, the first two towers sold out in three months. Sixty per cent of them were sold to Oakville residents. Sixty per cent were sold to first-time buyers and 10 per cent to residents who were buying for an investment purpose or for their children who would be attending Sheridan College. With square footages at just over 500 sq. ft., the condos appeal to first-time buyers. The new towers will be built alongside 20 townhouse units and six live/work units. Most of the parking would be underground and council was asked to relax its parking require- ments to allow for few vehicles. With small units, two spaces or the Town's required 1.5 per unit, was found to be too much in the first two towers. According to Tribute it costs $24,000 to build an underground parking spot and it's sold for less than that. A surface parking spot costs only $2,000-$3,000 to build. The plan proposes two 12storey condominium apartment buildings with a total of 276 residential units. It also calls for 20 townhouse units and six live/work units. The live/work units include commercial space on the ground floor. The condo would provide a fancy front entrance to the buildings, both outside and in, and recreational amenities. The site is currently vacant. A portion of it is being used for the Tribute Communities construction office and it's adjacent to the two original buildings which are now under construction. It's south of Oak Park and the Trafalgar War Memorial. To the south of the proposed buildings are residential uses on the south side of Georgian Drive, primarily semi-detached and single detached dwellings. Further to the south, medium density housing in the form of row townhouses exists. The neighbourhood has been designed based on a "radial grid" street network, including rear lanes and is designed to be a higher density, walkable community that's transit-friendly and is basically the uptown downtown. -- Angela Blackburn can be reached at angela@oakvillebeaver.com.
