It is particularly pleasing to win such a significant number of awards from North America's largest community newspaper contest. The Oakville Beaver won 17 awards in the Suburban Newspaper of America (SNA) Advertising & Promotions Contest -- the most by any communi Sunshine was in short supply Tuesday during the Canadian Multiculturalism Day Picnic at Bronte Creek Provincial Park, but the bright red-and-white colour scheme more than made up for it. From balloons, flags and temporary maple leaf tattoos to carnations pinned on dignitaries and a huge slab cake, this theme was repeated in vibrant defiance of the rain clouds that eventually forced the proceedings under the Breckon Shelter. No matter, the entertainment from a variety of cultures continued as planned and it's safe to say a good time was had by all. Hosted by the Halton Multicultural Council (HMC), the event provided the opportunity to learn more about the contributions that various communities make to Canadian society and to celebrate this country's richness and diversity. (The Government of Canada announced on Nov. 13, 2002 that Canadian Multiculturalism Day will be held on June 27 each year.) Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn whom HMC Managing Director Joanna Matthews called a "longstanding champion" of her organization maintained that multiculturalism is a "fundamental part of the values we hold dear" in Canada. If people bring the best of their cultures to this country, he said, then differences can actually bind Canadians closer together.
