www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday June 30, 2006 - 17 Summer Reading Club starts today Join this summer's most exciting heroic adventure the Summer Reading Club. More than 4,000 children participated last year. This summer, we are celebrating Heroes; heroes of might and magic, heroes in fact and fiction, sports heroes, super heroes, and four-legged heroes, just to name a few. Heroes aren't hard to find they even work and reside right in our own neighbourhood. The Oakville Public Library's annual Summer Reading Club starts today, June 30. The club promotes the fun of reading to young people and encourages them to read and visit their library during the summer. The library has been offering the club for approximately 25 years as a simple, recreational way to foster the joy of reading and at the same time reward their individual achievements. Children can pick up a reading log and a poster from the heroes at their local branch library and start reading. They might discover valiant characters in books about far-away, magical adventures or brave souls in realistic stories. Over the summer, club members will collect stickers, receive free prizes, enjoy great programs and even meet some local heroes just by participating and reading, reading and more reading. Reporting begins Monday, July 3. When they've have reached their goal they'll be invited to a special party during the week of Aug. 20 to celebrate their success. Reading is fun and can be a wonderful shared experience no age required. Parents can take part too, by reading aloud to their children, and even taking books on CD to listen to during long car rides. The last date for reporting is Friday, Aug. 18. End of summer parties with Magician Scott Dietrich are: Woodside, Aug. 22 at 10:30 a.m.; Iroquois Ridge, Aug. 22 at 2 p.m.; White Oaks, Aug. 23 at 10:30 a.m.; Central, Aug. 23 at 2 p.m.; and Glen Abbey, Aug. 23 at 6:30 p.m. For more information about the Summer Reading Club, pick up the summer issue of @ your library, free at all library branches. If you would like to be a hero to hundreds of Oakville children this summer, volunteer to with our summer reading program. We need student volunteers to help at each branch library. If you like working with children, this would be an opportunity to talk to kids about books they've read, hand out prizes, encourage them to read more and help with the activity programs. If you are between the ages of 14-17, contact any library branch for information. Submitted by the Oakville Public Library.
