The Oakville Beaver, Friday June 9, 2006 - 15 Loneliness of the Morden long distant runners By Jamie Murdoch and Cynthia McLauchlan Grade 8 W. H. Morden P.S. Twenty-five students from the elementary school W. H. Morden had been training vigorously for the last few weeks, trying their hardest to run 2500 metres. Not only were they working up to this incredible distance, but they were also minimizing the time spent running to as small a number as possible: not an easy feat. To accomplish such a large distance for a young age, these students were running three days a week gradually running longer, faster, and further. To start, anyone who was interested in joining the team signed themselves up. They were to prepare to run in the Mississauga Marathon student relay on May 13. To complete the race, each individual team of four people had to run a total of 10 kilometres! Each leg was approximately 2.5 kilometres long although some were slightly shorter, and others a little longer. However, this was used to the students' advantages. Since the Morden team was open to all, there were some people who weren't completely comfortable running the full 2500 meters, and were on the team to improve their strength, set personal goals, or just have fun. People who felt confident that they could make the full distance and want to push themselves to complete such a large amount could run the longer legs. This is because last year we found that some legs were longer then others, so we placed our stronger runners in the longer legs. This is of course assuming that the longer legs were where they were last year, which we hoped would be true Another great thing about this event was that it was almost entirely student driven. While we had support from a teacher, this person was on a leave of absence. So two co-captains stepped up, and managed to organize practices and keep the team on track. While our teacher is going to take the rest of the year of, she still comes to the school for our practices. Morden has a high-level cross-country team, which contributes to the large number of runners that we have received both this year and last year for the team. Our track and field section is also particularly ambitious, featuring a school-wide track meet in early June. Many of these students are also involved in competitive sports elsewhere, such as: hockey, gymnastics, dancing, and soccer. This helps keep them in shape for running. As a team, we have set the goal of fielding three highly competitive teams. We fielded an all-boys, one allgirls, and one co-ed team. Of course, it was not easy with about 70 elementary schools competing, but we hoped for the best. And so trained in hopes of reaching our goal. There were 148 student relay teams and this led to overcrowding on the shuttle buses that were to take the different groups of runners to their relay exchange points. The driver of the second group of runners literally closed the doors on three schools: Morden's B runners were among them. Despite attempts to get them to their exchange, they couldn't get there. This meant that when the first group, the A runners arrived at the exchange point, there was no one for them to tag off. After waiting and trying to figure out what to do, the Morden A runners continued the race and run an extra 2500 metres so not to let their teams down. The time they lost waiting and the extra distance they had to run resulted in slow overall times for all of our teams. But, considering everything that happened, the Morden runners still feel that we did well and had fun. 999 VOLVO'S SPRING CLEAN-UP THEY COME WITH LIFE EXPERIENCE.
