12 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday May 26, 2006 COMING SOON! YMCA rolls the clock back to the '50s for At the Hop The YMCA of Oakville is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a party designed to shake, rattle and roll the town of Oakville. On Saturday, Oct. 14, the YMCA will open its doors for At the Hop, a night of 1950s style entertainment and décor, with all proceeds going to some of the Y's charitable initiatives. The evening will feature 50s band Eddy and the Stingrays, complete with hula hoops, dance contests and bobby socks. "The Oakville YMCA has been in Oakville for 50 years, so we thought, let's jump on that theme and have a 50s sock hop and do it up with poodle skirts and a band playing 50s music," said the event's volunteer chair, Bonnie Jackson, who added people are encouraged to get into the spirit of the 50s and "dress the part." Local caterer Jennifer's Kitchen will provide guests with a feast of old favourites, including crab puffs and soda fountain treats, all done in an up-to-date way to suit today's tastes. Auctioneer Don Stewart will host a live and silent auction with a wide range of offerings to encourage guests to support a worthy cause in the community. Funds raised at the 50th anniversary celebration will support the relocation of the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital's cardiac rehabilitation program to the YMCA of Oakville facility, a move planned for September. The move will give cardiac patients a chance to have trainers, doctors and equipment on hand at the Y to give cardiac care. At the Hop will also support the YMCA of Oakville's Give Kids The Chance Annual Giving Campaign, which provides underprivileged youth and children with opportunities that are fun, challenging and safe at the YMCA. "I sort of thought the Y was a place to go to work out and exercise, I didn't realize they also support 400 families who live below the poverty line," Jackson said of her reasons for volunteering to chair the event. Fee assistance for membership, child care and camp programs to those in need, as well as free early years programs for parents and young children are some of the ways the YMCA is addressing the need in Oakville. "At the Hop is a chance for people go give back to the Oakville community, and to be supporting families that are needing our help," said Jackson, who has been working with the 50th anniversary committee since January in preparation for this year's festivities. The YMCA of Oakville, 410 Rebecca St., kicks off its 50th anniversary celebrations with a free picnic open to all from 1 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 11. At the Hop is Saturday, Oct. 14 from 7 p.m. midnight at the YMCA of Oakville. Tickets cost $150 per person. Call 905-845-5597 ext. 317 or email debth@oakville.ymca.ca.
