The team provincial champions and three national finalists. gear up for new season Oakville‘s precision skating club is determined to build on the success of last year in which two teams â€" novice and senior â€" won their respective provincial championships and then went on, along with the adult team, to the national championships in Montreal. The adult team captured bronze, the novice team finished seventh and the senior team settled for a second place finish in the consolation round. The club also had a juvenile team but there was no national competition in that category. It finished fourth in the central Ontario sectionals, missing a trip to the provincial championships by the slimmest of margins. This year, while many of the same skaters remain, the teams â€" which in many cases have intersecting age groups â€" have been revamped a bit. The novice and adult teams have been disbanded with the club opting to field the more elite junior (12â€"19) and senior (12 and over) categories. The juvenile team (under 12) remains intact. The goal, as always, is to get the junior and senior teams to the Canadian championships in midâ€"April and the juvenile team to the provincials (there‘s no nationals for the juveniles) in March. Practices have long been under way for all three teams â€" since before summer officially ended, in fact. The juveniles average about two and a half hours a week and the junior and senior teams, four to five. And they would certainly be out there more often if they could get more ice time. As well, there is an additional hour of dryland training per week. The senior team was due to skate in the second intermission of the Oakville Blades provincial junior A hockey game on Friday night and the other teams will follow suit in the new year. "That was really nice of the Blades executive," said precision team spokesperson Kim Warren. In the new year, the club quickly gets down to business with some imporâ€" tant meets and national qualifyers on the agenda. The club, along with the central Ontario division, is hosting this year‘s WinterFest in January which will take place in Newmarket.
