Cutting his teeth on what citizen committees were in place during the early Seventies, he was encouraged by members of counâ€" cil to run for office. After two terms on local council, Bird made the successful transition to regionâ€" al council where he served for eight years. After bowing out temâ€" porarily in 1988, Bird won again in 1991 by wresting the Ward 3 regional seat from incumbent John Graham. Included among the dozens of committees and boards Bird has served on are Budget Review, Oakville Chamber of Commerce; Oakville Centre Board and the Oakville Chamber of Commerce. As a private citizens he has been a part of Traffic Advisory Committee, Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee, Kerr Street Advisory Committee and others. "We couldn‘t operate without (volunteer) citizens," said Bird. "I certainly always tried to involve the community as best I could." Other major issues include the skilful management of growth, providing the highest possible level of service at the lowest cost and form costâ€"saving partnerships with the private sector.
