Hoffman honored for innovative By KATHRYN KATES Special to the Beaver When internationally renowned filmmaker, Phillip Hoffman isn‘t accepting awards for his short films and documentaries, you can find him in the media arts department at Sheridan College, where he‘s been teaching full time for the last eight years. On Sept. 18th, at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival, Hoffman was presented with the National Film Board of Canada, John Spotton Award Jury Citation for his film Technilogic Ordering. The jury stated that the award was given for the film‘s media critique and deconstruction of the Persian Gulf War. Earlier this year, Hoffman screened the film at the International Film Festival in Sydney, Australia and Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he garnered an honorable mention award. We all had a feeling, sitting back watching these broadcasts that they created a lot of anxiety, in that what was being broadcast was very veiled information about what was going on in Iraq. So we decided to create an activity through image making that would help us work through that time, which felt like a swelling panic that we couldn‘t do anything about, but the stuff kept coming at 39 you. Hoffman and his group started collecting, on video tape, fragments of Gulf War broadcasts. They colâ€" laged them together through a mosaic function (divides screen images into different boxes) and through this collage technique they brought to light the conventions of broadcast form and content and the ways that news is disseminated. Hoffman was pleased that the festival honored him with an award. "These types of films recognize the innovations that take place in eee00000 uuu ww w y‘ seeess short films, and may influence the way feature film projects are made." Since the midâ€"80‘s, Hoffman has been giving filmmaking workshops in film coâ€"operatives and schools throughout the world. He had the opportunity as a visiting professor of film to teach at the University of Helsinki in Finland and the University of South Florida in Tampa. Hoffman‘s films have been showcased at international film fesâ€" tivals in Finland, Estonia, Australia, Italy, France, and the United States. Hoffman‘s films have brought him many accolades. In 1987, he was nominated for a Genie Award (Canadian film honors). In addition to Technilogic Ordering, his most recent film‘s are Kitchenerâ€"Berlin, Opening Series, and Chimera. For those budding filmmakers of all ages, with or without experience, Hoffman gives a one week filmâ€" making workshop, north of Guelph, through the Sheridan College Summer School â€" Through The Arts. Hoffman was pleased with last summer‘s workshop that attracted both local and international stuâ€" dents. "One of the participants, Srinivas Krishna, known for his feature film Masala, had his short film Tell Me What You Saw, shown at the Toronto International Film Festival. He made the entire film at the retreat in just one week," said Hoffman.
