Greg Cullen also qualified for the Bantam 100m final in a time of 12.30 seconds. Some new club members also got their feet wet. Quaker State Quality everyrime! _ | B AND RECREATION * 260 Speers Roa{ The trials and tribulations Going into the summer season, Athletiques International Track and Field coach Bruce Burton had set two goals for 23â€"yearâ€"old Dave Viljeon: to establish himself as a 60â€" metre thrower and to make the finals at the Commonwealth Games Trials. After being the only javelin thrower at the recent Ontario chamâ€" pionships to better 60 metres with a personal record of 60.22m, he set his sights on a repeat performance in Victoria. Although his 59.96m was a touch shy of his distance goal, he showed that Kitchener was no fluke as he became the only Ontario athlete in the Commonwealth Trials final, where he finished eighth. _ Burton has already discussed the next set of goals with Viljeon: to throw 68 metres in 1995 and reach the medals at the nationals; and to throw 74 metres in 1996 to qualify for the Olympic Games in Atlanta. Joe Denes, 23, entered the stadiâ€" um for his first ever national chamâ€" pionships, expecting a thousand or so spectators to be on hand to witâ€" ness the start of the decathlon. Instead, he and the 20 other comâ€" petitors were greeted by 12,000 fans. Although Denes went to Victoria hoping for a breakâ€"through in his points total, that dream was dashed after two disastrous events. In the long jump, the second of the 10 events, he faulted his first two jumps and had to settle for a safety on his third, recording a mediocre 5.69m. To start the second day, he hit eight of the 10 hurdles in his race to record a time of 17.12 seconds, his worst time this season by half a secâ€" ond. He did make a major leap in the high jump, however, clearing a string of personal records that finally ended at 1.80m. During that event, he found himself among the elite of Canadian decathletes with only six athletes left, including defending Commonwealth Games Champion Michael Smith of Kenora. He also solidified his position in pole vault, tying his PR of 3.50m. When the dust settled, his 5802 points placed him 13th in Canada, and left several doors open for improvement. Donovan Bailey, 26, was hit by the flu bug shortly after arriving in the cool, wet climate of Victoria and never did contest the 100m. With the third spot in each event open for a wild card selection, Bailey was a victim of sorts when Bruny Surin was chosen for the team in the 100m ahead of him, despite the fact that Bailey had beaten him three times in Europe earlier this season. One of those races produced the fastest Canadian time of the year missing the Canadian Record by one oneâ€"hundreth of a second, with a 10.03.
