une 29, 1994 , ast midnight, on a foggy, _ dim night, a man in an d overcoat walked towards us and in a flash, it was The Spy Who Came In From The Cold. Same dreary night, same fog and...wait a minute...even the same There was the time Spiro T. Agnew was spotted in a Rome airâ€" port by my brotherâ€"inâ€"law (we didn‘t count that as an actual chance encounter); the time I said hello to the thenâ€"unknown k.d. lang in a rather decrepit university washroom as she was putting the final touches onto her cowpoke ensemble; an autograph from Robbie Alomar while he stopped at an Oakville liquor store (and you can bet the entire team is now perusing the shelves of the liquor store even as we speak); the time Tom Selleck kissed my sister in a parking lot of a Toronto club. But there was a difference. There were no extras milling jilbout, no director snapping out Commands, or no cameras rolling through the scene. And I wasn‘t watching the big screen stuffing my face on popcorn. As he passed us, with an almost furtive, oh, noâ€"notâ€"anotherâ€"autoâ€" graphâ€"seekingâ€"fan look, our eyes met briefly. And as he glanced up ever so briefly in a kind of hunted way, we decided at that moment just to keep walking; to not hound the man for his autograph. He was out, the same as us, seeking some private space on a rainy evening in Toronto. Let him be, so who wants an autograph? It wasn‘t a film set and yet there, in the flesh, was a real live superstar, lit up for a moment by the street light. It was Richard Burton and seeâ€" ing him just walking along on a dimly lit street with no one about was rather disconcerting. Where were the bodyguards, the paparazzi, the limousines? Nothing. Not a bit of it. Just a guy in an overcoat looking as though he‘d run the other way if he were to be recognized. Celebrities frequent the most mundane of locations We looked at each other after he‘d passed and said at the same time like some star struck teenagers: "That was Richard Burton!" And like anyone else I suppose, we told a million people about it, with everyone else sharing all their big time chance encounters with the rich and famous. Everyone must work together to solve Grand Blvd. Plaza problem All of these we bragged about, elaborated upon, argued about. Needless to say, these chance encounters with the famous prove Dear Sir: I share Paul Deverson‘s conâ€" cern about the Grand Boulevard Plaza. I have lived for 23 years within 400 feet of one of the boundaries of the property. That is the distance which the Town has set for automatic notification of all planning issues relative to it, on the assumption of a greater impact than on those living furâ€" ther way. I believe Mr. Deverson lives within the same parameters and his opinions should be taken seriâ€" ously. I agree with him that this is an important issue. I agree with him that it should not become a politiâ€" cal football. It needs a construcâ€" tive effort to find a long overdue solution that is reasonably acceptâ€" able to all concerned. We want our elected representatives, together with the Town staff, to be proactive. They should not allow the matter to lay moribund until the property owner comes up in a few year‘s time with yet another rezoning application, as has been the pattern in the past. In all fairness, however, I see Mr. Deverson‘s personal criticism of Jim Smith (no relative of mine!) and Kurt Franklin just as 2. When prompted enter the 4â€"digit code from the directory 3. Like shopping, or taking a solitary walk, or even fussing about the mirror before a big gig. It‘s kind of nice to see one of the famous in an informal, unexâ€" pected encounter. destructive, in this context, as the attacks on Bill Logan which he rightly deplores. Kurt is the leader of a relativeâ€" ly small group of area residents. His voice is no more and no less valid than Mr. Deverson‘s. Jim is one of our two elected councillors â€" the other being Bill Logan. It seemed to me that Jim weighed all the issues and tried to come up with a compromise that might have reasonably satisfied all parâ€" ties. I wouldn‘t call that "playing And I think the younger you are, the more impact it has. Take Tuesday, July 5, 1994 Monday, July 4, 1994 Take Notice That: Directory ....... Advertising .. There was obviously a strong grass roots feeling among some within the community that the rezoning application, even after two or three major revisions, still did not adequately address some important local concerns. Density was only one of severâ€" al vital issues. The risk that the property owner would withdraw was well known and fully acceptâ€" ed by those who felt strongly about the matters.
