In fact, just about anyone offering goods or services will find the debit card system worth considering. It‘s just a matter of good busiâ€" ness because research shows that the more payment options retailers can offer, the wider their customer base. For the merchants, the debit card system provides improved cash flow; avoids loss through bad cheques; reduces the time spent hanâ€" dling, processing, and depositing other paperâ€"based forms of payâ€" ment; and lessens the security risk of keeping large amounts of cash on hand. Aside from a monthly fee for the rental of the sophisticated terminal equipment (which can also process credit card transaction), bank charges include a nominal transaction fee. Debit cards, then, are very attractive to both retailers and cusâ€" tomers. The customer doesn‘t need to visit a branch or automated banking machine to get cash before going shopping; debit cards are faster than paying by cheque; there is less risk of loss or theft than with cash; payment is made immediately; there is always immediate access to funds for emergencies or to take advantage of sales; and the transaction record is a handy way of keeping financial records in order. Cathy Schroeder of Springbrook Crescent, Oakville was the winâ€" ner of a PAAL II Personal Attack Alarm in a draw held at the Oakville Lifestyle Home Show. The unit was provided by Cynthia Cooper, distributor for Quorum International. It‘s relatively early in the development of the exciting payment system here, but extensive testing has provided a good indication of how things will develop. Testing in Canada and experience elsewhere shows that supermarâ€" kets, convenience stores, and gasoline stations will be major users of the debit card system. The process enables customers to pay for purâ€" chases by an electronic transfer from their bank account to that of the merchant. Specialty stores, small food retailers, restaurants, and department stores are also likely to find it an attractive payment option for their customers. Now that the debit card is being introduced in Ontario, what kinds of stores are likely to offer this service to their customers? How does the merchant benefit?
