One day last summer we went fishâ€" ing together up near Havelock and he told me that he had a surprise for lunch. A revelation it was! When the time had come for us to prepare our shorelunch, he rummaged through his tackle box and presented me with a bottle of my favorite wine. Now talk about class, a shorelunch on a fishing Then we had a change of governâ€" ment, one which appears to be dediâ€" cated to destroying the police forces all over Ontario as well as the fabric of the society which we both loved so much and promised to serve. And then finally, when the Police Commission in Toronto fell apart and was stacked with political and incompetent appointees, I had enough and checked out. I retired, but Kenny did not. He told me once that Toronto deserves much better and he would stay on and fight. That was real class, one of Metro‘s finest! A few years ago, I got my own squad and looked for a number of suitâ€" able applicants. Kenny made the top of the list. I put him there, hoping that he would work with me. Well, he did and I will be grateful forever. Not only did he make my job much easier as my colleague, but we became friends and fishing buddies. There are no grapes growing in Havelock, nor does anybody make wine up there. It‘s just too cold. So when Ken Rutherford grew up in this small hamlet near Peterborough, he, like all the other teenagers, drank the odd glass of rye and had a few bottles of beer. Sometimes it got so cold up there that even the beer froze when the kids hid it behind the garage. Like most young men, Kenny left the small town and moved into the Toronto area in search of his career and to raise a family. I first met Kenny at work. We both had chosen a profession that bonded all those together who had to rely on each other â€" we were police officers. Perhaps the difference was that Kenny still liked a bottle of beer at times while I drank only wine. Of course, a police officer has not an easy lot and more than once we also had a few drinks together, after work naturally. I cried into my wine and Kenny into his beer. If I had to come up with one quick attribute to him, it probably would have been the fact that Kenny never complained about anything and was completely dedicated to serving the citizens of Toronto. We both were rather proud of our profession and everything went very well for a time. A bottle of beer is just great with fish We did not catch many fish that day, but so what, we were out together and besides, Kenny was one of the few guys who never complained if the fishing was lousy. I didn‘t have enough guts to tell him that white wine would probably have gone better trip and a bottle of red wine. I found out by chance. Knowing Kenny, the few weeks of his illness were much harder on his family and his friends. It was a Christmas we were all scared of. Kenny Rutherford left us this past Sunday, four days after his 43rd birthâ€" day. Perhaps it was only a coincidence, but it was also the coldâ€" est day of the year. with fish So Kenny, wherever you are, I hope the fishing is great, and rememâ€" ~don‘t worry about red or white wine; a ber whatever we told you in the past, _ bottle of beer goes just great with fish.
