(905) 624â€"8510 Thanks to you, the recyclihg of newspapers in Ontario has reached an astonishing 75% recovery rate among households with Blue Box service. How much is that? Quite simply, more than a quarter of a million tonnes of newspapers were kept out of garbage dumps in 1992, which already . exceeds the provincial and national targets set for the year 2000. Theseâ€"old newspapers would fill 35,000 garbage trucks, a bumperâ€"toâ€"bumper convoy that would stretch from Toronto to Kingston. Most importantly, newspaper recycling reduces landfill dumping costs and our need for new and expanded dump sites. Recycling newspapers and flyer inserts is a real Ontario success story. Everybody enjoys the parade, but we often lose sight of the fact that even in our own community, there are people less forâ€" tunate than ourselves," said Kinsmen For the fifth year in a row, the Oakville Santa Claus parade will be led off with the Oakville Kinsmen and Kinette Club‘s tractor trailer and crew collecting food donations from the spectators. The parade is on Saturday, Nov. 20th, in downtown Oakville. â€" Drinking and Driving Awareness Award nominations sought The Town of Oakville‘s Special Committee Against Impaired Driving is, once again, seeking nominations for the committee‘s annual Drinking and Driving Awareness Award. Midâ€"term reports were distributed NOVEMBER 12, 1993 As homeowners one of the major expenses you face each month is your mortgage payment. As you are probably aware, mortgage rates have dropped significantly in the last few years and the idea of refinancing is attractive to most people. Your mortgage will contain certain privileges allowing you to prepay all or part of the principal sum and I will attempt to clarify those |! options and costs to you. Most mortgages can be described as closed mortgages with limited prepayment options. This means you have the privilege to prepay part of the principal without ty but no privilege to pay off the entire mortgage. The maximum amount that can be prepaid without penalty will be 10% each year in the case of most bank mortgages and 15% each year in the case of most trust company mortgages. In order to refinance to obtain a better rate you will be required to pay more than these amounts and will likely incur a penalty. Banks and trust companies differ greatly in the amount of penalty you must pay to refinance. Some trust companies such an Canada Trust do not allow any prepayment larger than the 15% prepayment allowed each year. Most banks allow you to prepay the entire principal amount if you pay a penalty equal to the greater of 3 months interest or interest differential. The exact calculation differs with each institution but is basically the difference between your interest rate and the current interest rate multiplied by the principal sum for the balance of the term. An example of this is as follows. Mortgage amt. Present rate Time to maturity Current 2 year rate $100,000 11.75% 2 years 715% The interest differential penalty would be 11.75%â€"7.175% or 4% x $100,000.00 x 2 years = $8000 3 mo. interest penalty = $2,895.58 If your mortgage was originally a CMHC insured high ratio mortgage the maximum will be reduced to 3 . months interest after your third Mortgage Héfinmcing Could Save You Money Real Estate ... The Bottom Line New mortgage options are plentiful at this time ranging from 6 month open mortgages to 7 and 10 year closed mortgages. Two of the most popular options available at this time are the 5 year mortgage and the 6 year convertible mortgage. Both these products are closed with limited prepayment privileges. The five year mortgage is currently at a rate of between 8.5% and 8.75%. If we took our $100,000.00 example and added in the penalty our new mortgage principal amount would be $108,000.00. Even with this additional principal your payments would reduce from $1011.44 ger month at 11.75% to $876.54 at .15%. The 6 month convertible mortgage is currently one of the most popular options. The rate is 5.75% and the .mortgage allows the borrower to: lock into a 5 year mortgage at any time without penalty. This allows the borrower to gain the benefit of the lower rate and not risk any rise in mortgage rates. The payments for our example mortgage on a 6 month convertible term would reduce to $675.02 per month. Now would seem to be the time to > contact your financial institution. or | myself to determine the costs and benefits of refinancing your mortgage. "The club is asking that spectators bring an appropriate food donation, which will be collected by Kinsmen at the front of the parade," continued Beauchamp. Kinsmen will be pushing shopping carts beside a tractor trailer. The parade watchers will have the opporâ€" tunity to put their donation into a cart at the beginning of the parade. The food will then be loaded onto the trailâ€" er to be driven to a local sorting and distribution centre. Cash donations will be accepted from those who forget to bring a food donation. "In a community such as ours, children receive so much, and quite often they do not realize how lucky they are," said Laurinda Dorn, the Kinette president. "The thought behind this project is that the Kin clubs could perform ‘a community serâ€" vice by collecting food, and help chilâ€" dren realize that this season also â€" involves giving, as well as receiving. Our Kin clubs are like a lot of people â€" sometimes we just write cheques. The foodâ€"drive project lets our clubs and the kids participate directly in charity during a period when even more people need our help," said In past years, Kinsmen and Kinettes have collected enough food to provide several weeks supply of food Oakville‘s requires. The donated money is distributed to Oakville food banks and to the Oakville Christmas * Assistance fund. _______ f ~ St. John Ambulance "Get a Life" Don‘t miss the Run of the House!
