He pointed to a major change in communication between management and workers, a team effort of "takâ€" ing down the barriers and letting things happen." He also pinpointed a growing awareness on the part of workers of customer satisfaction in the quality of the finished product and how it directly relates to their jobs. Kelly and Khan lauded the workers for their hard work and "sincerity" in achieving the award they had striven for for two vears. By BARB JOY QOakville Beaver Staff « Ford‘s Ontario Truck Plant workers took an hour or two at the beginning and end of their respective shifts to attend an official ceremony at which Hank Nichol, viceâ€" president and general manager of Ford‘s North American Vehicle Operation, presented the Q1 Award to Plant Manager J.B. Kelly and Mahmood Khan, Canadian Auto Workers® plant chairman. Several local officials, area dealers and representatives from supplier companies joined truck employees, union and management officials in the huge white tent adjacent to the Ontario Truck Plant. In his address, Kelly noted that the Q1 Award repreâ€" sented a substantial improvement in the way workers turned out their product. "Five years ago, we had problems with consistent qualâ€" ity, cost, safety," he said. "Since that time, Ontario Truck workers and management realized they had to change and Both Ford of Canada management and its union were loud in their praise of truck workers and the quality award they received Wednesday. "I hope the workers‘ dedication and sincerity sends a clear message to management that Ontario Truck is No. 1 and must be considered for future consideration for what we are losing as of November 1st," he said. At the same time, he said local unions and manageâ€" ments were not as confrontational in their relationships as they used to be and that this attitude would continue "as long as there is a win/win situation." On management‘s behalf, Don McKenzie, Ford‘s viceâ€" president of employee relations, thanked the workers for their hard work and and team spirit, mentioning at the same time his longâ€"standing affiliation with Ontario Truck Plant "in a variety of jobs." He later explained that the Q1 award was originally offered to nonâ€"company suppliers but was brought into the company and opened for competition to all plants in North America. Although he didn‘t know how many had been awarded, he said Oakville‘s was only the second plant in Canada that has received it. "It‘s a vigorous process they (workers) go through to get it," he said. "All of them participate in it." Said Bob Chernecki, assistant to CAW‘s president: ‘"This award says that, if you give the Canadian worker the tools, the opportunity and provide him with respect and dignity, he will produce the best quality product.
