Terrace Bay to stay a township by Darren MacDonald Staff A proposal to change Ter- race Bay to a town from a township has been halted for at least the lifespan of the current council. That's because an objection to the change was filed with the Ontario Municipal Board, and Councillors decided fight- ing or acquiescing to the objec- tion would be too costly. "When we applied to the Municipal Board, it had to be advertised," says Clerk-Trea- surer Dave Fulton. "And peo- ple had a chance to file objec- tions to it. And we had one objection." That objection was filed by Terrace Bay resident Carol Cringle. She says she didn't like the fact that Council was asking the Municipal Board for permission to stay with four councillors, rather than expanding to six. Towns are usually required to have a min- imum of six councillors. "T just felt that four was not enough," says Cringle. "Right now they're having trouble get- ting to meetings on a regular basis. So maybe it's time to increase (the size of Council) to six so that the work's divid- ed a little more evenly." ; Cringle also says she filed an objection because she didn't see any valid reason to change the name. "(Council) used tourism as an excuse, but there's no mar- keting plan in place, so how can that be an excuse?" she says. "But I was willing to let that objection slide as long as there would be six council- lors." But Dave Fulton says that Council only wanted to go ahead with the name change if it didn't cost too much money. "And they didn't feel it was worth spending possibly up to $10,000 to go through a Municipal Board hearing to try and settle this," he says.
