Acker's body, and that of 35 year old Russell Otto of Mid- dleville, Michigan, was found Friday, July 10, by mine res- cue teams from Minnova and Hemlo. The two men were reported missing when they didn't retum to town Thursday evening. Schreiber OPP say the men were found floating in water in a mine shaft. The shaft is locat- ed on a mine claim that was held by Walter Acker. "They were pumping out (water from) the mine shaft using a gasoline-powered pump that they had put down in the shaft," says OPP Sgt. Andy Templar. "The shaft is approximately 110 feet deep, and they were found about 38-40 feet down from the top of the shaft," says OPP Const. Murray Woodman, who was the investigating offi- cer in the case. That's one of the points made in a brief present- ed by McCausland Treasurer John Gray to the provincial steering committee examining proposed changes to the Public Hospitals Act. Gray made the presentation on behalf of the McCausland's Board of Governors on July 8 in Thunder Bay. "Our success is directly linked to the unique talents, time commitment, altruism and service provided by the volun- teer trustees," Gray said. "This willing and motivated pool of human resources cannot be overlooked and dropped by the wayside."
