Down 'omer offers Newfoundland no screech cuisine--but there's still Carole and Ed Barry (above) opened The Down 'omer restaurant last Friday morning in Terrace Bay. _Page 13, News, Tuesday, February 25, 1992 continued from page 5 enshrine certain social and economic standards that might otherwise be eroded through social dumping under European deregulation." | "Social dumping" is now happening in North America, as we move towards a free trade agreement with the United States and Mexico. As Europe moves to completely break down all its trade and monetary barriers this year, the member countries of the EEC wanted to avoid what's now happening in North America, where companies have production facilities to Mexico because of cheap labour, weaker occupational Northern Insights health and safety laws, and virtually non-existent envi- ronmental regulations. Thus in principle, a Social Charter for Canada is likely a good thing. It would stop us from becoming like Mexico, and set standards for pushing Canada further towards the |. European model of economic development: high wages, a high standard of living, and high value-added industries. Whether we'll get a Social Charter, however, will boil down to the whims of those ten or eleven men in a closed room with many other agen- das on their minds other than lofty principles. CROSS CANADA MARKETPLACE IT'S FAST - IT'S EASY! ONE CALL, ONE BILL DOES IT ALL. THINK BIG - CALL THIS NEWSPAPER FOR DETAILS. by Alice Scott This week I would like to discuss an animal that is becoming a popular pet for many people, the guinea pig. This little animal can make any child happy and does not require the care and attention that you have to give a dog or cat. I recommend that until the child understands how to han- dle these little creatures, you should supervise any activity your child plans with the pet outside of the cage. Try to purchase a fairly young animal since it will be easier to adjust the guinea pig to being handled. Care of this little pet is quite easy, but their nails should be trimmed only by an adult. _ A long-haired guinea pig can be brushed, but do not Pet Talk Ys by Alice Scott Guinea pig can make an ideal pet for kids bathe them. Keep your pet away from drafts and in a warm room. Guinea pigs do get lonely from time to time, so make sure you spend time with them. Feeding is simple; give them apples, carrots, lettuce, potato peelings, pellets and Citrus fruits. The pet store will have food and treats that you should feed your pet. Go to the library or buy a book on guinea pigs so you can explain to your child how to care for this pet. Remem- ber, this is a small animal and must be handled gently. Keep his cage clean and fresh water available at all times. You will be surprised at how loving these little animals will become if they are treated with care.
