The "global village" we have heard about for so long is here. The second session looked at an array of recent statistics relat- ing to Northwestern Ontario. Income levels, unemployment, education levels, major employ- ers, changes in the population profile, crime and social service statistics and a new report from Confederation College on Student aspirations in the Northwest. There were some surprises among these statistics. Over 40 per cent of students in our High Schools (Dryden excepted) plan to go directly to the workforce from Grade 12. This varies from com- munity to community but not by very much. The next session looked at the key sectors of the economy of Northwestern Ontario and exam- ined the strengths and vulnerabili- ee Mearthwestern ¢ , ° A . ties of those sectors. Municipal Government, Forest Products Industry, Mining Industry, Service Sector, Social Services, Transportation, Tourism, Native Issues and the Environment were discussed in small groups and the results reported to the group as a whole. Discussion centered on positive ways to minimize vulner- abilities and build on strengths. This session led to the final one where we were able to bring a lot of new knowledge to setting goals for 1995. The success of this forum was a result of the depth of knowledge the participants brought to the discussions. Each person there had expertise in something and all were willing to share their knowledge. Each discussion led to the growing feeling that all these sectors of our regional com- munity are inter-dependent. None of the sectors stands alone. Planning for the future must include many sectors and ensure the inclusion of everyone in the process. Thanks to Quetico Centre for seeing the need and bringing the people together.
