Photo by Angie Saunders First Annual Pays Plat Pow Wow a roaring success By Angie Saunders The News Pays Plat First Nation 1st Annual Pow Wow was held last weekend. In an event attended by a few hundred, the weather stayed warm and agreeable for the entire two days. This was the first major Pow Wow held at Pays Plat. "We've had a few before just trying to get it going, but nothing like this," 'said Chief Aime Bouchard. "Over the years we've been trying to teach tradition." Some natives were dressed in traditional costumes of leather, feathers, and beads. Some of the women wore beautiful garments called jingle dresses. These dress- es used for dancing, had dozens and dozens of bells sewn on. 'hours of work' Indian crafts and clothing were sold. Leather moccasins, wall plaques, deer hide mits, hair adornments, and beautiful jewelry were just some of articles avail- able. Many of the things were hand sewn and decorated with porcupine quills and beads typical of Native culture. Hours of work ~ went into the hand-made articles which are made locally around Nakina, Ontario. Battle of Oka shirts were a popular item being sold all weekend. The baseball diamond on the reserve was converted into Pow Wow grounds. Benches were set up as well as two covered stands made of trees. One held the singers and the other was for the Master of Ceremonies to host the festivities from. All together eight drum groups, with about six singers to a group, took turns singing for the various dances of the Pow Wow. "It was a great successful Pow Wow for Pays Plat for the first time," said MC Jim Windigo, "It was beautiful for the first year because sometimes they don't turn out." Near the end of the Pow Wow, a flag song was sung and played for the lowering of the flags. -The Stars and Stripes, the Maple Leaf, and the Chief's Flag were low- ered. The flags are flown in respect during the entire Pow Wow. The last song was the Travelling song. This song is to wish everyone good luck with travelling which sometimes can be dangerous.. At the end of the song that all participate in, every- one shakes hands. A supper was held after the wind-up of the Pow Wow. People from Kenora, the United States, Northwest Bay, as well as all over Ontario had a wonderful time at Pays Plat.
