This year you should be extra cautious when purchasing any insect repellent or shampoo for-your dogs and cats. The Department of National Health and Welfare has advised consumers to avoid using any product containing the chemical Repellent II (R-II). Some of the most common items are listed below, these should not be used unless they nave been replaced by products free of R-II: Para S Bomb pres- surized Spray, Hunter Flea and Tick Killer for cats and dogs, Bandit Long Acting Flea Spray, CCL Flea and Tick Spray for pets, Hagen Flea Killer for dogs and cats, and Hartz Flea Killer for dogs and cats. Contact your vet to purchase products from them that are free _ from R-II. "Lyme disease" has become a growing concem for all pet own- ers. Hunting dogs are more likely to contact this disease, due to the fact they spend many hours in the woods, where the culprit, the deer tick, who carries the "lyme borre- liosis" dwells. In dogs, signs of the disease include fever, listlessness, lack of appetite, and sometimes swollen glymph glands, Eventually kid- ney disease and arthritis-like symptoms may develop. In both dogs and humans, lyme disease is diagnosed through blood tc sts that detect the presence of antibodies. Once Lyme disease has been diagnosed, treatment is similar in dogs and humans. The antibiotic tetracycline has proven quite effecuve during the early stages of the disease. Examine your dog regularly for ticks during tick season. Purchase a tick repellent collar or spray from your vet. If you find a tick on your dog, remove the tick carefully with tweezers. Pull the tick gradually but firmly outward. Once the tick has been removed, clean the skin thor- oughly. Bites from ticks in infested areas result in illness only half the time, so don't panic if you find a tick on your dog. At the present time, our area is clear, but once you travel towards the U.S. eastern Canada, or southern Ontario, your pet's risks will increase. At present, the best defenses against Lyme disease continue to be awareness and avoidance. The pageant consisted of nine mothers, but unfortunately it had to come down to the last four contestants. These were: Cecile Chicoine, Mel Webb, Sandy Larivee, and Georgette Cebrario. Jackie Commisso gave up her reign as Mother of the Year to Georgette Cebrario, who was elected for 1990. She was presented with a love- ly crown and a bouquet of roses. The wind-up for Schreiber CWL will include a pot-luck sup- per and be followed by a Chinese auction. Chimo Club Report- The gen- eral meeting on May 18th was chaired by President Ken Davis. Card Secretary Eva Gordon had sent cards to patients in the hospital and a sympathy card to Dunning on her passing. : The annual club picnic is scheduled for July 11th. Convenors Ken Davis and Beth Macadam will assign assistants to take care of refreshments and games. Members were reminded that the Senior Games will be held in Thunder Bay in June. Spacewalk for Seniors which is an annual event is from May 25th to June 3rd. The annual Church Parade is on June 10th in St. John's Anglican Church. Birthday greetings were sung to Mary Ihnatko, Alma Hart, Joe Cataford, and Russel Macadam. Born in North Dakota in 1904, he was the fourth child in a family of eleven. In 1907, the Rentz family moved to Maiuitoba. August travelled to the Beardmore/ Geraldton area and became involved in prospecting, woodcutting, and trapping. August is an active member of the Birchwood resident's council, and enjoys bowling, pool and shuffleboard. An avid crib player, August once held a 29 point hand (the highest possible hand in crib), and complained that "it took more than 80 years to get it." August just celebrated his 86th birthday, and believes that he would not change anything in his life if he had the chance. August also enjoys his life at Birchwood and praises the staff for their efficiency.
