Centre Meeting The first Annual General Meeting of the Superior North Development Centre Inc. was held in the Terrace Bay Rec Centre on May 8th at 7:00 p.m. The Business Development Centre is one of the options under the Community Futures Program funded by Employment and Immigration Canada. The Schreiber - Terrace Bay Community Futures Committee was established in 1987 to serve the area from Pays Plat to Jackfish. The Committee developed a proposal during the first half of 1988 to submit to the federal gov- ernment requesting funding for five years to operate a business development centre. Upon receiving the govern- ment;s approval in the fall, 16 local citizens volunteered to sit on the Board of Directors to over- see the affairs of the new corpora- tion. A manager and an adminis- trative assistant were hired, and the new centre was opened on Simcoe Plaza in Terrace Bay in January of 1989. The Centre;s objectives are: 1) to provide business advisory services, as it relates to business plan development, market research, and business skills training; 2) to serve as an information service on funding programs, financial options, site selection, local and regional statistics and general business information; 3) to offer funding to establish new businesses or to expand existing ones. The Centre also administers the Self-Employment Incentive which encourages recipients of Unemployment Insurance or Social Assistance to become self- employed by providing them with a weekly living allowance during the first year of their business venture. At the Annual General Meeting, the Chairman of the Board, Scott Fraser, outlined the Centre's achievements during 1989. He reported that 100 clients have been served, and a total of six business loans were issued, ranging from $2,500 to $40,000, for a total investment of $108,500. An additional $605,600 was leveraged from other sources. The Centre assist- ed other clients in obtaining a total of approximately $300,000 from other funding institutions or programs. As a result of the investments, over 30 jobs have been created or maintained during the Centre's first year of operation. Mr. Fraser stated that he hopes the Centre will accomplish even more during the second year. Jim Johnson tendered his res- ignation due to personal commit- ments. Upon election of three new members, the Board of Directors presently consists of: Juris Zdanovskis, Chairperson; Paul Paradis, Vice Chairperson; John Lubberdink, Secretary-Treasurer; Scott Fraser, Susan Glad, Melody Mateev, George Matys, Michael Moore, Jim Herculson, and Joyce Morin.
