Wednesday, February 28, 1990 TBSO Concerts By Angie Saunders The Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra will be performing on March 5- 10th in Geraldton, Hearst, and Marathon for a week long tour. There are 3 programs arranged specially for adults, high chool, and elementary school. The TBSO, conducted by Glenn Mossop usually plays clas- sical music but for this tour there will be a variety of classical and modern music that all ages will enjoy. Community concert patrons will be treated to kossini's Il Signor Bruschino, Mendelssohn's Italian Symphony, aud Delius' On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring. The high school age can enjoy Rimsky- Korsakov's Flight of the Bumblebee and R.W. Lowden's arrangement of Send in the Clowns. Marathon will be holding a reception following the performance. People should feel free to come and ask questions about the various instruments and music. The community concert in Marathon on March 8th will fea- ture basoonist Harold Wever in Mozart's Basoon Concerto. In Hearst, on March March 7th , Neilson's Concerto will spotlight a solo by flautist Penelope Clarke. Most people don't realize that playing in a symphony orchestra is a full- time job. Out of a seven day week, six is spent rehearsing. The average musician rehearses 3-5 hours with the orchestra and 3- 4 hours ontheir own time éach day. An hour long work usually takes 7 hours of rehearsal before it is playable for an audience. Of the 30 people in the TBSO, only one is a Thunder Bay native. There are musicians from the United States, China, Sweden, and 6provinces of Canada. All are super- talented people because of the competition they must face to become a part of the orchestra. THere is a lack of jobs in the musical field, so auditions are held in Thunder Bay for any postion in the orchestra. Some very fine players, from all over the world audition but only the best will become a part: of the TBSO. The TBSO is funded both federally and provicially Northern Ontario is toured twice a year-. going west for one tour then east for the other. If you find it unable to attend a concert in Geraldton, Hearst, or Marathon, you could always catch the TBSO in Thunder Bay. One to three concerts are played each weck at the Thunder Bay Community Auditorium at 450 Beberly Street. You can obtain tickets by calling 343-2300.
