Last week, he boxed himself to a light-flyweig it bronze medal, al the Commonwealth Games in Auckland, New Zcaland. In his debut flight, Filane defeated a Tanzianian boxer, and advanced to the medal round. When he lost to an intimidating boxer from. Uganda; inthe -semi- finals, he collected the bronze. "It's starting to sink in now, but I was really down after the fight because I was so close (to the gold)," said the 20-year-old Filane the next day. A telegram he received from Schreiber with at least 300 signa- tures gave Filanc the confidence he needed before his first fight. He knew his town and his family were behind him, win or lose.
