NITC covers the area as far east as Mobert, west to Pays Plat and north to Manitouwadge which is a total population of about 15,000 people. The survey will be sent by mail to under 500 businesses in this area to determine what types of training are required to upgrade employee skills. The survey will be sent out in early January and Leslie Dickson, program co-ordinator with the Community Futures Program, said once the information is back and compiled she hopes for results to be in by the end of February. NITC will then determine what training programs to pursue and work out and submit the required budgets to the Ministry of Skills Development and Employment and Immigration Canada. Dickson stressed the importance of businesses completing the needs survey. She said poor results will} make it very hard to determine} what courses will have to be pur- chased for the appropriate upgrad- ing. Dickson said once the courses} are decided upon, the information will be given to the government! from a local level. This way the upgrading will be geared to the necds of a particular area. Many groups are involved with the program including labor, educa- tion, business and government. Dickson also said NITC is hop- ing the training will be done at a local level, possibly even on the job Site. Marilyn Murphy is the co-ordi- nator of the needs survey and the contact for businesses if they have any questions about the survey. She is located in Marathon and can be reached at 225-0569. The official Mission Statement of NITC is, "To determine the training needs n the region served by the NITC and to successfully train local residents and upgrade their skills thereby improving the existing skill base and increasing regional employability." The program will be run by both the employees and the company with the employees doing the driv- ing. The drivers were selected on the basis of which department they worked in, what shift they will be working, and their driving record. All of the drivers are volunteers and Dickson said roughly the same amount of vehicles will be starting in Schreiber and Terrace Bay. The car pool will operate seven days a week and cover all shifts. OPP winter car checks Every year, the first snowfall seems to take Ontario drivers by surprise. This year, however, by preparing ahead, motorists can ensure safe driving throughout the winter. Having your car properly tuned and fluid levels checked is the most important step. The gas tank should be at least half-full in cold weather to avoid gas-line freezing, resulting in stalling. Snow tires should be used if the car is not equipped with all-season radials to alleviate slipping on snow and ice. A kit containing ice scraper, shovel, booster cables, flares, blan- kets and a first-aid kit should be stored in the trunk. When parking, run the car back and forth to make a track that will make it easier to get out later. Allow ample space between cars. During rough weather condi- tions, headlights should be on at all times, and windows kept clear of Continued on page 3 Christmas Cheer 2 ~ e---z Whata glorious time of year for one and all! Photo by Dave Chmara Public inquiry to take place following air ambulance crash Delegates to,.the Ontario Federation of Labour convention unanimously passed an emergency resolution demanding a full public inquiry into the contracting and delivery of ambulance services in Ontario. The resolution, sponsored by the Ontario Public Service Employees Union, came in the wake of a tragic crash of an air ambulance near Chapleau, Ont. Nov. 30. Two paramedics, members of OPSEU Local 649, were killed in the crash, as were the pilot and co- pilot employed by Voyageur Airways Ltd. OFL delegates stood for a minute of silence in memory of the crash victims. Mark Lowell, chairperson of OPSEU's ambulance division, told the OFL delegates that one of the dead paramedics, Ian Harris, was very..worried about the lack of experience of the Voyageur pilots and had considered refusing to fly with them. "He felt that the Voyaguer pilots were not trained or experienced enough in the kind of flying that is required in air ambulances, with the lives of patients in the balance," Lowell said. OPSEU president James Clancy said the province's policy of con- tracting out air ambulance services to small airlines is a danger to the public. "When the government insists on doing something on the cheap, health and py suffers, " Clancy said. A recent OPSEU-sponsored inquiry reported that ambulance services are confused and under- equipped, and called on the govern- ment to open a full inquiry.
