D.A.G. meeting last one until spring By Gertrude Cotton Jim Ziegler, the newly elected Reeve of Terrace Bay, Cathy Withers of Beta Sigma Phi and Dave Chmara, the new editor of the Terrace Bay/Schreiber News, were special guests welcomed to the November meeting of the Disability Action Group, Thurs. Nov. 17, along with a new member, Pat Auger. On behalf of Beta Sigma Phi, who had raised funds through a blood pressure booth at the Fall Fair, Cathy Withers presented Treasurer Pam Jones with a cheque for $100. Pam expressed the grati- tude of the organization, stating it would be used towards one of D.A.G.s projects, Handitransit or Lifeline. Following business reports, a reply was read from Terrace Bay Council regarding another ramp at the east end of Simcoe Plaza. Presently no funds were available, but it would be looked in to this winter or early spring. President Shirley Mikus had discussed this, topic with Police Chief Kidder, suggesting moving the present handicap parking closer to the Bank and with additional handicap areas designated by the Municipal Office and at the end of the Plaza by the Strawberry Parch. She had further urged the areas be widened to allow a wheelchair to be lowered beside the vehicle. Members were advised handicap signs were avail- able at the Police Station. These are not license plates, but signs for any car transporting a handicapped per- son. Inspection of the Public School in Terrace Bay showed less accessi- bility since its renovations. Presently,» one cubicle was wheelchair accessible in the girls washroom, and no other. It will eventually be accessible, but timing indefinite. Pam discussed problems with taking residents to Senior Bowling at the Recreation Centre. The A & W sign had taken away the ramp space and there had been no replacement. Also there were obstacles in reaching the side doors. This had been reported to Director Dean Main. Shirley thanked Jim Ziegler for his assistance and letters would be forthcoming seeking inclusion in the 1989 budget for both towns. Linda Cairns of Independent Living had requested a reference from D.A.G., and Jim gave Shirley a book on this project for Linda. As usual, the January and February meetings will be can- celled due to winter difficulties with transportation, and D.A.G. will continue throughout the sum- mer months. Jack Patterson object- ed to this system due to the need to meet with regard to furthering Handitransit. A meeting is being arranged with Murray English, Minister of Transportation and Communication in Toronto, and this committee will continue work- ing. The December meeting will be brief in order to have a Christmas Party.
