Futures approval dependent on local support The Schreiber-Terrace Bay Community Futures Committee received approval last month from the federal government for nearly $400,000. This allotment is to be used to establish various programs aimed at diversifying and strengthening the local economy. Over half of this grant has been allocated for a Business Development Centre. This Centre is expected to be a store-front office with staff quali- fied to give technical and business advice to people in business and to those planning to-establish a new business venture. In addition, the Centre will have an investment fund from which loans may be offered to small businesses. The local volunteers, who sit on the Community Futures Committee, worked for nearly tow 'years to acquire the government's approval for funding, and now they are anxious to put this money to work for our communities by getting the proposed programs operational. In order to open a Business Development Centre, a Board of Directors must be estab- lished to over-see the operation of the Centre and to evaluate busi- ness loan applications. A committee meeting was held on October 27 and all persons interested in sitting on the Board of Directors were invited to attend in the hope of establishing a Board. Committee Chairman John Smrke explained that he Community Futures Program pro- vided communities based on a sin- gle resource industry, such as ours, with the means to plan for their economic future. Smrke reminded those attending the meeting that Minnova's mine at Winston Lake has a limited life. Kimberly-Clark experienced a major down-sizing in its number of employees two years ago, and perhaps this may happen again in the future. Many railroad towns have had to cope with a major lay- off of workers and this could con- ceivably happen in Schreiber. The Business Development Centre will encourage new busi- ness ventures and help to strength- en existing businesses. These businesses will provided addition- al employment for the area and will broaden the economic base to make the communities less depen- dent on the major employers. Smrke pointed out that those who will benefit most from this Drug awareness The Schreiber/Terrace Bay and area Council on Drug Awareness wishes to announce that there will be a series of short films on Drug Free Awareness offered by the ADDICTION RESEARCH FOUNDATION on Channel 13, compliments of the Lake Shore Community Cablevision. The videos will be shown from November 14 to November 18. They will air each night from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and will review drug related issues that affect the family and individuals. A series of six short puppet movies on drugs will be shown for children in the 6-9 age bracket but are also excel- lent for the whole family or any- one interested in drug awareness.
