Recognize signs By Alice Scott One comment I hear from many pet owners is "' My pet is never sick." Quite often, it is because people do not recognize health problems that are affecting their pet. The following are some simple Steps to ensure good health for your pet. 1. General.attitude is very important with an animal. Is your pet quiet and listless? How does your pet react when you ask if they want to go for a walk? Do they still seem interested in play- ing fetch or with their toys? 2. Stools should be checked periodically. Look for any signs of irregularity such as diarrhea or constipation. Additionally, a stool sample should be examined by a vet once a year to check for worms. Do not attempt to worm your dog or cat with over-the-counter drugs because it requires a differ- ent treatment for each species of worm. Changing the food can some- times cause problems as well. Gradually, change your dog's food by mixing his old and new food brands together for a few days. 3. A change in appetite is a good indication of your pet's health. If a dog or cat has always been a finicky eater, you can con- Pet Talk However, if a pet that general- sult your vet about trying a new food the next time you see him or Page 7, News, Wednesday, October 19., 1988 ly has had a good appetite does not want to eat, picks at its food or vomits after eating, you should be concerned. 4. Check the ears every week for signs of discharge or foul smell. If your pet shakes its head often, or constantly scratches its ear, it may have a problem with mites, which we cannot see. 5. Learn how to take your pet's temperature to see if it has a fever. This will help the vet arrive at a diagnosis. Ask your vet to show you the proper procedures for tak- ing a dog's or cat's temperature during your next visit to the vet. Animals can't tell us how they of pet illness ways. If you are concerned about any change in your pet's general attitude and appearance, call your vet. Most veterinarians are more than co-operative during phone consultations, and understand the distances pet owners have to trav- el. Making a phone call can help you feel more at ease and is not a great expense when it comes to your pet's health. Note: For those interested, Alice will be giving an informal talk during the next Disability Action Group meeting on Oct. 20 at 7.00 p.m. at McCausland Hospital.
