Back in the Corner tr 'by Greg Huneault A cool breeze kept me comfort- able under my pullover sweater as I drove up to the Schreiber O.P.P. detachment. I awoke bright and early on a what I felt was a chilly morning to get some action photos of the local police running in the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics. After an hour delay (police do not exceed the speed limit unless aboslutely necessary) the torch arrived at the detachment after being hand-delivered by Nipigon O.P.P. officers. By that time, my sweater had become a reservoir. Prior to their arrival, I had mem- orized and travelled the Schreiber route. It would be tricky to get as many photos as possible, but I was in good shape -- or so I thought. By the time the relay reached the Terrace Bay Recreation Centre, I had lost about 20 pounds and was a heaving mess of stuff. I'm so out of shape I can't even jog my memory any more. I almost black out when I bend down to tie my' shoes. I lose. my breath seeing someone in a warm-up suit. Those constables and police personnel from Schreiber, Terrace Bay and Nipigon made it look easy and enjoyable. And the funds are for a good cause. The money raised by sponsored runners will go to the Special Olympics. It's still not too late to "Adopt- A-Cop." If you would like to help the Special Olympics and sponsor one of the local police who ran, contact either the Schreiber O.PP. at 824-2333 ot the Terrace Bay Police Department at 825-3232. Sandy Harbinson, the venerable editor of our sister paper The Nipigon/Red Rock Gazette, trav- elled to our office Tuesday to help us install a new computer program. The program will allow us to improve our method of distributing the paper to those who read it regu- larly. Apparently, tens of thousands of subscribers along the Pacific Rim, parts of New Zealand and virtually all of South America have been experiencing problems getting The Terrace Bay/Schreiber News. As I understand it, council decided to postpone the meeting until July 15. In their zest to cram in another week of holidays for some of the councillors and town officials, they forgot to tell me. Who can blame them, really? _ The meeting was not a failure, - however, as I passed many relevant by-laws. Among the highlights of my first chaired meeting as "His Supreme Ruler and Immenseness of Terrace Bay": ¢ Kimberly-Clark was ordered to establish a two-way relationship with the local paper to acknowl- 'edge the company's responsibility to its employees and to the resi- dents of Terrace Bay. Also, they will be sent a letter requesting funding for a loan of 20 bucks 'til my next paycheck. ¢ Because of the large number dogs running throughout the town at their will, a by-law was passed restricting people to travel in groups of not less than four and only between the hours of direct sunlight (as determined by Thunder Bay television's Weather Report ). In the foreseeable event that a child or adult is bitten, the guilty dog will be forced to watch three - consecutive episodes of Days of our Lives, or two hours of local cable t.v. ° These by-laws will be stricken from the books and his Immense- ness will step down if council agrees to advertise re-scheduled council meetings in advance where possible. In this manner, any interested member of the public who may have planned to attend can remain, at home and teach his dog to stay in the yard. I bet you'll always remember where you were and what you were doing when you heard that Wayne Gretzky was traded to the glitzy, star-spangled L.A. Kings of the NHL. I do. I was in Costa's scraping a thin layer of crystalized ice off a package of frozen chicken. It was useless to me. It's worth millions to him.
