Crow told the group that the campaign has already surpassed the half-way mark, and is well on the way to raising the necessary $1.5-million, but the drive is still ongoing. She said about 25 people per day are benefitting from the CATScan machine, which is located in Thunder Bay, but serves Northwest Ontario. The Senior Volunteer must live in a community with a population of less that 25,000 people and in a community that does not already benefit by the services of a Senior Volunteer. Once the volunteer has familiar- ized himself with his own commu- nity resources, he/she is then equipped to begin the peer coun- selling role. In addition to the liason role, the Volunteer must also react to indi- vidual neéds in his respective com- munity by: providing actual service (e.g. visiting a lonely individual in the hospital) or by arranging for others to meet the need (e.g. seeing that he is visited by someone else) ; by co-ordinating social events or by planning for community change. At present, there are 16 Senior Volunteers located in communities across the District of Thunder Bay such as Nipigon, Red Rock, Nakina and Manitouwadge. These volunteers are playing a vital role in assisting fellow seniors in their home communities. Well I guess July has just about had it. Summer is going by, and with the winter cata- logues out it seems like we are rushing toward winter! We want to send our congratula- tions and best wishes to Mr. and Mrs. Paul Sigurdson on the birth of their baby daughter. I understand mother, baby and father are doing well. We are looking forward to seeing the new baby. Our activities gal, Sylvie Angus, is back from holidays and is busy with planning outings for the resi- dents. It's nice to get out now because the winter is long and many of us are not able to go out in the cold. As well, we all have the fear of falling on the icy sidewalks. © No doubt many of you are busy getting ready for the Fall Fair. We enjoy this event. It's sort of a 'friendly gathering' and we can see folks we have not seen for a while due to summer vacations.
