Terrace Bay among chosen Northerners to set improved education access Residents of six more Northern Ontario communities will have access in September to college, university and special high school courses without having to travel. Colleges and Universities Minister Lyn McLeod and Northern Development Minister Rene Fontaine announced the addi- tional Contact North network sites today. The Teleconference network of electronic classrooms will be expanded to include Manitou- wadge, Terrace Bay, Nipigon and Big Trout Lake in the northwest, Cochrane and' New Liskeard in the northeast. Mrs. McLeod said other com- munities not officially part of Contact North will receive equip- ment and funding to allow them to access the system on a short-term basis. - "Contact North has developed as a valuable method of providing access to more people to post sec- ondary education," Mrs. McLeod said. Mr. Fontaine said another inno- vation scheduled for this fall is the introduction of computer-assisted "blackboards". "Special pens, tablets and com- puter screens will allow tcachers and students across the north to communicate instantaneously in writing," said Mr. Fontaine. Contact North is a teleconfer- ence network enabling teachers and students throughout Northern 'Dntario to talk to each other as if in an electronic classroom linking communities from the Manitoba to the Quebec border. Institutions participating include Ontario's two northern universities, the five northern colleges, the Independent Learning Centre of the Ministry of Education and several northern secondary schools. Local triathalon proposed for teens As part of Canada Day The Terrace Bay Canada Day _ Committee is looking for sugges- tions from area teenagers to see if - there is enough interest to stage a triathalon during Canada Day cele- brations, A triathalon is a three-event competition usually combining swimming, running and cycling. Either teams or individuals can par- ticipate, and the goal is to complete a designated course in the fastest time. Chris Joubert, Canada Day Committee chairman, said the com- mittee hopes that teenagers are interested in becoming more involved in the special day's events. "One thing we wanted to see was more events for teenagers. It would be something they'd proba- bly enjoy," Joubert told the News. The committee is now looking for input from interested persons. Ideas include setting up a course through town where teams would jog and bike before swimming lengths of the pool. Each member would do one specific event. Interested persons can contact Chris Joubert at 825-9295 (-3802) or Greg Huneault at 825-3747.
