Page 2, News, Wednesday, May 18, 1988 Professional Day focused on 'Being' Are you rewarded for what you do, or for what you are? By John Liptay This was the question posed on May 12 at Terrace Bay to the 80 teachers and staff members of the North of Superior District R.C.S.S. Board. Fr. Al McMillan, director of . the Lay Ministries program at Espanola, was the inspiring keynote speaker at this Professional Development day sponsored jointly by the Board and the Catholic Teachers Association. "Unfortunately," said Fr. Al, "this is the basic societal principle: the focus is on doing and not on being. " He called this a myth that needs to be destroyed especially in Catholic Schools. In our schools, our stance as teachers is that we share ourselves as people of God, in personal relationship with God, as sons and daughters of God, pre- cious, especially because of person- al brokenness. "As we teachers share our per- sonal stories, " Fr. Al emphasized, "we are seen for what we are; and most essentially, for what we are in God's eyes. When we focus on the stories of persons, we portray, in an incredible way, the core of how Catholic Schools are different." Fr. Al stressed that the greatest teaching we can do is to teach com- passion, reconciliation, and love, and, that this is done by living out these attitudes with the students, "getting involved in each other's lives." "The key to successful relation- ships, " he added, "is to see in each other who we really are! This kind of relationship creates oneness. This unity is what Eucharist is all about. At Mass we celebrate being one. The Catholic teacher creates a BEING TOGETHER, and this is what creates a dynamic Catholic School. "In this way," concluded the speaker, "teaching is experienced as a ministry of the people of God. What then becomes crucially important is not the curriculum, but people. When we minister Christ to each other, we become the Word of God, i.e., we are SACRAMENT to each other; we can be this because we have God's very own Spirit within us... the learner can learn because the real learning barrier, the inner woundedness, is touched and healed. That's what Catholic Schools are about." During the second day, the teachers attended small group workshops which included the top- ics of: aids (Mrs. F. Kelly, Woodstock), learning centres (Mrs. K. Debnam, Thunder Bay), Family life (Miss M. Mathieu, Sudbury), Drama (Mrs. J. Halonen, Thunder Bay), Special ed. (Mrs. J. Roy, Manitouwadge), Library aides (Mrs. T. Korol, Thunder Bay). Also, there was a workshop for secretaries by Mr. K. Ryan from Schreiber. A special visitor was Miss Eileen Lennon, president of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association, Toronto. Rossport society asks for correction Recently there was some incor- rect reporting in Anne Todesco's usual articles. We would like to clear this matter up for anyone con- cerned. The Rossport Historical Society is hoping that CPR will allow them to obtain a caboose for a museum. However, nothing is definite in this regard and such a statement should have not appeared in the paper. It is hoped that the reporting of same will not disqualify the Society for consideration in their endeav- ors. Thank you.
