Page 2, News, Wednesday, May 11, 1988 Anne Todesco brings us for a tour of Rossport Under the Forest Fire Prevention Act, fire permits were delivered to property owners by the Ministry of natural resources, as the village has considerable high grass and forests close to it. The local fire committee mem- bers have been buming this vegeta- tion, etc., in their spare time with weather permitting. The committee has considerable equipment to keep the fire under control at all times. Wedding Annoynsement The engagement is announced of Elizabeth Ann Gregg, Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Donald Gregg of Cambridge to Bruce John Lang. Son of Hazel Lang of Terrace Bay and the late Jack Lang. The wed- ding will take place at 3:00 p.m., July 23 in St. Davids Church, Cambridge. More bang for a buck The oil furnace at the Com- munity Hall backfired while a prac- tice of an amateur play was in progress. Information received stat- ed that the new chimney was too small for the furnace, It may be a new-fangled type of chimney, but a number of us think the big brick chimney should never have been demolished. Both a wood burning and oil furnace were used and the W.I.-organization never had any trouble with the heating system. Shut-ins and senior citizens were able to attend the dress rehearsal of the comedy "The Hand That Cradles the Rock" last Saturday afternoon. All of those who attended enjoyed the play, which is directed by Judy Sundland. Caboose on the loose A petition is circulating around the village regarding the caboose that CPR is donating to the com- munity. It is to be used as a muse- um. The petition states that the caboose should not be put on pri- vate property. The owner could sell the property to someone who might dispose of it, or the villagers would have to incur more expense to move it to another location. Villagers who have been here for many generations say that the caboose should be located on crown land or on CPR property. This decision should be made by all. This is for the birds Large flocks of wild geese are winging their way to their northern nesting habitat. They present a magnificent sight as they fly over- head in their famous V formation while continually honking. Since I came home, I have been told that they settled by the hun- dreds on Beartrap Lake just a mile and a half northwest of the village. They stayed for an overnight rest and feed before they continued their journey north, although some of the big birds do remain here for the summer and choose nesting grounds among the islands. Their famous V-shape formation while in flight is one of Nature's inspiring pleasures, as we watch the Canada Goose return to its nest- ing area. Capturing their Spring and Fall event is a joy to all Canadians; its impressive appear- ance is beyond description. Every specie of duck has been here for weeks. They settle in any available stretch or pool of water and come ashore for handouts of com, bread crusts, etc.,. Some herons have been noticed, but the swans and pelicans aren't in sight -- unless they are settled in small coves among the islands. Helene says to play it safe around the chimney By Helene Ballard | Hi there! I hope you are all enjoying this nice weather, but we sure do need rain. Things are so dry the danger of fires is great, so please folks - do be careful with matches and cigarettes. I think we all remember the bad fire of two years ago this month and we don't want to go through another day like that one. Our card playing friends were in on Tuesday the 3rd for the usual Come & Go Shower In honour of Grace Commisso will be held on Sunday, May 15, 1988 from 8 p.m. - 10 p.m. At Holy Angels Parish Centre Everyone Welcome. ai, afternoon of cards. Qur thanks to those devoted friends. No doubt you can see the tall chimney next to the Home getting shorter every day. It sure will be queer not to see it anymore, and I have heard some people talking against taking it down, but it was no longer in use and most of all it was unsafe. Better to take it down than to leave it up and risk an acci- dent if it were blown down in a strong wind storm. Some folks thought they would like to get one of the bricks for a memento, but please do not come around to the back of the Home. It's very easy to get hurt. When those bricks come down fast the way they do, someone could get hurt. I know I sure would not like to get hit on the head by one. Many pictures have been taken while this work has been going on; I guess its a wee bit of excitement for our town, n'est pas? Now that all the winter's trash has been cleaned, please let us all do our part in keeping it clean. Don't throw empty pop cans on the front lawn at Birchwood. We want our home to look nice and tidy. I would like to invite you folks to our annual "Bake Sale" put on by the Ladies Auxiliary of Birchwood. It is May 20th and I'll tell you 'the time next week. I see in this week's paper our new editor is going to get married; well congrat- ulations Greg. May I wish you and your future wife a world of happi- ness and good luck. Several of our residents drove to Schreiber. to see the Pagoda Acrobats. I am sure they all enjoyed it. Guess this will be all for this week, so until then this wee "Joke". Because of a housing shortage "near a military base where he was stationed, a young doctor, his wife and three children had to live in cramped quarters in a hotel. A friend said to the Doctor's six-year- old daughter. "Isn't it too bad that you don't have a home?" "Oh, we have a home," the child replied quickly. "We just don't have a house to put it in."
