4 Local play involves everyone from the Script Assistant... By Judi Sundland The biographies of all those involved in the Rossport Theatre Groups production of "The Hand that Cradles the Rock" are now complete except for the individual who wrote them all and who has been instrumental in the play as well. Maureen Tychoniak was never involved with theatre before and never wanted to act. She attended the group's first meeting because it was a long winter and she wanted to be involved in the community. Although you won't see Maureen on stage, she will be behind the curtains helping the women change costumes between scenes - no small task, as timing is important. Maureen has been invaluable as Script Assistant, cuing the perform- ers on their lines and at times dis- covering meanings all of us had missed. She says it has been inter- esting watching the lines from the first practice to the present, observ- ing how each character in the play has grown and taken on his or her part. When asked if she'd be inter- ested in the theatre again, Maureen expressed an interest in directing. "Tt would be intefesting positioning the characters and being involved in the creative part of the play," she said. She and her husband, Don, have owned property in Rossport for five years but it wasn't until the last eight months that they moved to the community. Presently, the entire family is involved in building a new home. Maureen wishes she knew more about carpentry - after all, her Grandfather was a Carpenter Hold the Line on Mowing Time Dear John: When I call to my son to mow the lawn, he gives me a busy signal. Do you think it's because our '4 acre lawn might be a long distance number for a walk-behind mower? Dear On-Hold Pop: Your son Dear John: John Deere Answers Your Lawn and Garden Woes - perhaps she'd be a natural! She took up aerobics and fell into teaching it by chance when her own instructor had to quit. Four years and conferences as well as classes have put a lot of experience into her instructing. Many women in Rossport enthusiastically use her expertise. In quiet times one can find Maureen reading or writing prose and poetry, several submissions of which have been submitted to Rossport's newspaper, The Harbor Express. Perhaps that's why it seemed only natural to have Maureen interview the members of the theatre group and write about them. We all thank her for a job well done. The first dress rehearsal, com- plete with audience for the timing of laughter and lines, was held on April 23rd. It's countdown now as the days tick away to the first open- ing night's performance. ...to the cast in the kitchen By Maureen Tychoniak In previous articles we have introduced the actors and members of the Rossport Theatre Group, as well as those behind the scenes who have made contributions. There is another, entirely different side to the May 7th Dinner Theatre, and that is the planning and prepar- ing of the dinner. This responsibili- ty has been placed in the capable hands of Mary Burnett. Mary has been a resident of Rossport for 13 years, and at one time she co-managed the Rossport Inn with her husband, Roger Hity. She is currently the Corrections Co-ordinator for the area and an avid gardener in her off-hours. She is a dedicated volunteer who is committed to such groups as the Rossport Recreation acre, a walk-behind mower can be fine. But, if it's % acre or more, or Committee, Literacy Committee, Northshore Family Resource Committee, Community Futures, Northern Development Council, and the N.W.O. Women's Decade Council. She is also the chairperson for Project Mayday. While Mary is the master-plan- ner, there are many people involved with the cooking and serving of the dinner. These volunteers will be preparing the food, setting up the tables, serving, and of course, cleaning up. Some people from the village have donated food towards the dinner, and others have money. It is definitely a community effort. The menu for the evening includes ceasar salad, prime rib, baked pota- toes, carrots, and cheesecake. It's looking like a great night for the lucky people who managed to acquire tickets. if it takes more than an hour to do the job, a riding mower would hold the line on mowing time. If your lawn is between | and 2 acres, a lawn tractor should do the trick. And, if it's larger than 2 acres, or you want to do other jobs in addition to cutting grass, a lawn and garden tractor is the one for continued on page 12 THUNDER BAY COMMUNITY AUDITORIUI OPEN HOUSE May 12th 6 p.m.-9 p.m. Ternace Bay Rec.
