Schreiber- Students at Holy Angels School participated in cre- ating projects during Lent that focussed on several aspects of Quebec's Winter Carnival. Stacey Shack's project cen- tered on the Dorie race. This three-mile race has 14 teams of five men competing in 1,000- pound Dories, said Stacey. The men have to do what they have to to get the boats across the river. There are medals and cash prizes awarded in this event. Ashley Riley and Denise Labbe constructed the Glissade. This is a long, ice and snow- packed runway where people on toboggans race for a mile-and-a- half. The racers have no brakes so they slow down gradually by the end of the ramp, the girls said. Dean Lemieux talked about his skidoo races project, made mostly with small plastercine ski- doos. The race, he said, is 700 metres in length (a quarter-mile) and there are different categories to suit the engine sizes of the machines. Phillip Figliomeni and Frank Costa told the News about their Mustache Contest project. The boys made three heads that had long and curly mustach- es. Susan Harris and Jackie Glad's project was La Cabane a Sucre. What happens here is maple syrup is dribbled on the snow and then taffee cones are made. The girls said the maple syrup used is tapped from trees the pre- vious year. The Bonhomme Carnival by Judy Baxter and Anna Carangi is actually an ice palace. 1,200 blocks of ice are used to make it as well as some fibreglass and plastic. The girls said a restaurant and several dance floors are contained in the palace. . ~ "It glitters with light," they said. Richard Moorey's project was called Rue St. Therese. For 10 days ice sculptures are created on this road in lower Quebec, "to see who can make the best ice sculpture," he said. No cars are allowed to drive on that street for the 10 days but a small train does Carry tourists there, said Moorey. COMPARE QUALITY, COMPARE PRICE If You Don't, You May Pay Too Much!
