Games begin on Saturday, February 13: 1988 Calgary will have the XV Winter | iin ss Terrace Bay was chilly for the arrival of the Olympic Torch- Schreiber was freezing! During both the torchlight parade (see picture) and the arrival of the torch, residents at the recreation complex could not stay still for fear of their toes becoming numb. People bounced around at the Schreiber Public School on Friday, January 8, in anticipation of walking to the recreation complex to officially start the Schreiber Olympic Torch Days. Torch Bearers Donald Beno and Douglas Adey carried the Olympic flag in the procession (see picture). Reeve Mike Cosgrove spoke for a few minutes to start the celebrations, fol- lowed by a huge bonfire, free hot chocolate, a teen dance and a torch dance. The next day saw such events as the children's play day, another free public skate, a tot dance, a spaghetti supper and a moc- casin dance. On Sunday there was yet another free public skate, " minor hockey games, ringette fun day and a broomball game which pit- ted Schreiber council and the recreation committee against the Schreiber fire- men and the firemen's auxil- lary. The firemen and auxiliary won by a score of 5 to 1. The ice sculpture contest, a special weekend event, had Janet Moorey winning in the individual category with her torch bearer. Unfortunately, warmer weather started to melt the poor runner. First place in the group category went to the employees of Birch's with their Hidy and Howdy sculpture. Second place in the group went to the fire- men and their torch which was seen by all in the recre- ation complex parking lot. Awards presentation The Celebration '88 Certificates of Merit to rec- ognize those Schreiberites who have made outstanding contributions to their com- munities were given out at the supper and awards pre- sentation night on Monday, January 11. The medals were given out at the torch ceremony earlier in the day in the recreation complex parking lot (see picture). This program honours those among us who have demonstrated. characteristics which are in keeping with the admirable ideals of the Olympic spirit; hard work, determination, moral char- acter, and dedication to the community. Schreiberites who received the certificates were Edna Cocks, George Riley, Geoff Birch, Stan Spadoni, Ian Fummerton, Gene Ross, Mavis Godin, Don Burton, John McKenzie, Connie Connelly, Gerry Figliomeni and Mavis Slater. "TENDERS are now being accepted for a pool table approximate size being 6ft. X 12ft. in good condition, comes with accessories. Tenders will be received until 5 p.m. Feb. 6th, 1988 then publicly opened at 5:30 the same day. Tenders received after the closing date will be returned unopened.
