Is it Elvis? No, it isn't actually Elvis Presley, but you couldn't be faulted for believing so. It's really Elvis impersonator Billy Can, who is scheduled to perform his "Memories and Reflections of the King" concert in on Nov. 13 at the Schreiber High School. Can met Elvis several times before Presley's death, and lives only two blocks away' from Elvis's Graceland in Tennessee. Penner's message By Keith Penner, MP Cochrane-Superior Riding Each year, November 11 is ded- icated to the Canadian men and women who served their country in this century's three great wars. It is dedicated to the aging veterans who are living testimony to the sad- ness of war, and it is dedicated to the Canadians who did not return home from these conflicts: 61,000 in World War One, 42,000 in World 'War Two, and 300 in the Korean War. Thirty years have passed since the end of the last major conflict, the Korean War, but each Remembrance Each Remembrance Day, there are reasons why they went to battle. On November 11, when we stop to pay tribute to those courageous Canad- ians, let us also remember that it is now up to us to preserve the peace that they fought so hard to achieve. fewer veterans to recall first-hand the ~ By Conrad Felber "It's a tribute to a great man who started it all," Elvis Presley imper- sonator Billy Can said of his popular act, which is coming to Schreiber this Thursday. In a telephone interview with the News from his home in Memphis, Tennessee, Can explained that his "Memories and Reflections of the King" has taken him around the world, including Australia, Japan, and West Germany. His Schreiber concert is part of a Canadian tour which included Toron- to and will take him to Winnipeg later - this month, following the Schreiber date. 'I love it up there," he said of Canada, where he has toured before. "*Canada played a very important role in Elvis's career...he only played in one other country (besides the United States) in his life, and that was Canada."' Can added that it was "a Canadian fellow," Hank Snow, who convinc- ed Presley's parents to allow Elvis to sign a record contract. **And the rest is history," Can said. "'T live just two blocks away from Graceland," Can said, referring to Elvis's home and final resting place. "The first thing I ever heard on the radio was 'Louisiana Hayride' by Elvis."' Can noted that he had met "The King" a number of times before Elvis died several years ago. "I was a fan of his and I admired him very much."' Shortly after Elvis's death, Can was asked to do a Presley impression for a charity event, and he was thrill- ed at the response he received. That one moment in the spotlight launch- ed Can's career, which has outlasted those of many other Elvis imitators. Can claimed that he didn't want to be "just another Elvis imperson- ator," and quickly tailored his act to make it "a pure tribute to the man" rather than a personality parody. "'We can do many things in our lives to keep his memory alive," Can explained. "I've been very success- ful, thank God, in doing so."' He stressed that during his concerts he never professes to actually be Elvis. "I tell the folks that it's a tribute to a great man, to bring back their memories of him, with no dis- respect." Can-said Elvis's death came as a "total shock" which is with him to this day. "While he was alive, he gave so Day we reflect on what those wars mean for Canadians of today. It is largely because of the sacrifices of past generations that we now live in a country that is at peace, where freedom is taken for granted. Few young people in the world have been able to enjoy the gift of peace for so long. Time separates us from the realities of our past wars. But we must remember that only miles separate us from the realities of other people's wars. Every day in many parts of the world, soldiers and civilians die. Can covers the same famous range of songs, from the popular Presley ballads to the equally renowned rock hits. '"'?'m very much looking forward Schreiber News.
