'Our original estimate was 25 per cent (of the 140-strong workforce), but that estimate may certain- ly be conservative now,' he said, referring to the layoffs. He said the mine will do everything in its power to hire some of the laid-off K-C employees and, in Premier Peterson's words, 'turn some forestry guys into miners.' wet Vi SCHOOL auls _ oatt Smrke did ask Peterson for some financial assistance in terms of retraining funds, and Peter- son agreed to be helpful. Council was asked to take action after a delega- tion of concerned citizens appeared at the meeting. Reeve Mike Cosgrove in- formed them that Council has been proceeding against those who have been ignoring the by-law. He explained that 15 let- ters had been sent out on Sept. 3. Each letter was ac- tually an order issued in conjunction with a notice of by-law. The order allows 14 days for an appeal. Reeve Cosgrove admitted that as of the meeting, no appeals have been receiv- ed and, in fact, one town resident had actually refus- ed to accept the order, sent by registered mail. The orders call for the person's yard to be cleared of rubbish and debris, and that heavy undergrowth such as grass be cut. All wrecked, dismantled, or abandoned vehicles must also be removed. 'Longlac is having the same problems as we are having here,' Councillor Bob Krause pointed out. Later on at the meeting, Council passed its by-law amendment establishing a fine of no less than $500 per day for each day the by-law is broken upon conviction. 'This gives us the option to go to court instead of just actually doing the clean-up work ourselves,' clerk- treasurer Aurel Gauthier said. 'If we go to court, we need something for the judge to work with.' Ironically, earlier in the meeting, the awards for the annual Schreiber Beauti- fication Contest were presented to the winners. Council also passed a by-law to adopt its Official" Plan. Gauthier noted that dot on the map which says 'Terrace Bay' disappear.'
