Wheee! These two youngsters seemed to have a good time on the Scrambler ride at the Midway held by Maple Leaf Amusements of Winnipeg and sponsored by the Terrace Bay Kinsmen Club. The Midway was held on Simcoe Plaza in Terrace Bay on July 11 and 12. It featured a number of other exciting rides as well as games of chance, a fortune teller, and some cotton candy too, of course. Mis World Tour stops in area After almost three years and 16 different countries on four continents, Richard Beecroft peddled his three- wheeled cycle into Ontario on June 25 to begin the final leg of his World Tour for Multiple Sclerosis. He arrived in Terrace Bay on July 7. The 36-year-old Ottawa resident is a victim of MS himself, and has had the disease since he was 19. In 1976 it seemed he would be permanently bedridden. He fought back, though, with yoga, a positive men- tal attitude, Transcendental Meditation, and a vegetar- ian diet. Now the disease is in remission and he is al- most completely recover- ed, though he still finds it difficult to walk even three city blocks. He discovered that cycl- ing is not as difficult as walking, and-so in 1981 he launched a cross-Canada "*Cycle of Celebration" to observe the International Year of Disabled Persons. When he completed his trip he became the first disabl- ed person to cross the nat- ion under his own power. The success of that voy- age prompted him to start the MS World Tour, which got underway in Toronto in September of 1983. His plan was to cycle the distance equivalent to the circumference of the world (40,000 kilometres). Since he began, Beecroft has been robbed at least twice, hit by five cars, and crossed six deserts. But he has remained optimistic, and said "During the time I have been cycling, my ex- periences have been 100 times more positive' than negative. It really is a wonderful world we live in ..-people have offered me support everywhere that I have been."' That support extended to Terrace Bay, where the Red Dog Inn gave him a -omplimentary room for the evening, and the Town- ship Council presented him with a cheque for $100. MS affects an estimated 50,000 Canadians, accor- ding to a Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada news re- lease. The chronic, still in- curable disease usually. strikes men and women who are between the ages of 20 and 40. It can cause a variety of symptoms, in- cluding vision difficulties, lack of coordination, trem- or, extreme fatigue, and even paralysis. Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, July 16, 1986, page 3 Programs now on A number of programs being sponsored in whole or in part by the Police Force in Terrace Bay will continue this summer, in- cluding both Operation Id- entification and the Summ- er Bicycle Safety Program. Police Chief R. Phillips is looking for young bi- cyclists who are seen riding their vehicles according to the rules of the road. These cyclists use hand signals and walk their bike across busy roads. Chief Phillips will also be look- ing for those who ride on the proper side of the road and not on the sidewalk. If you should happen to see such a cyclist and would like to advise the Police Force so that they can consider them for their weekly award, then give the Police Office a call at 825-3232 and those young- sters will be added to the list for consideration. Operation Identification is still available for those who are interested in mark- ing the valuable in their home or camp. Chief Phillips said it is a good idea to mark all of your items to make it easier for such items to be return- ed to their proper owner in the event of loss or theft. Just drop by the office and fill out a request to borrow the necessary engraver.
