By Helene Ballard Hi! Well, I hope you are all recovering from the ex- citement of last Wednesday ...that was too close for comfort. I feel we all owe our grateful thanks to the men who worked so hard fighting this fire and also to the pilots of the water bombers who did a won- derful job. It's too bad the Minister of Transportation could not have been here in person to see that we really do need another road for exit and entrance to the new sub- division. I understand we can't have too many exits on to Highway 17, but surely some other way can be found to correct this. Thanks The Terrace Bay Men's Slo-Pitch executive would like to thank the following individuals and businesses for making our recent benefit tournament such a huge success. Thanks to Cathy and Al Papineau, the St. Louis gang, Cindy Thompson, Maureen Pytyck and Jim Pompoukas for their untir- ing efforts at the dance; Seems it was only a few weeks ago I wrote in this column about having to evacuate residents. Well, we had a good example of this last Wednesday. Let's hope that something can be done about this. Our thanks are due also to the staff here at Birch- wood Terrace who had things under control. Every resident was well cared for. Also thanks to all the peo- ple of Schreiber, who so kindly looked after us after we got there. It was a real comfort. Last but not least, to our Police Force, who also did a good job of keep- ing order out of chaos. I think we should redou- ble our efforts and work on given 'Adamo Lounge for the beautiful trophy, Jim Mikus for the prized for the winning team, Mark Sar- ampaa and the High School Tape Club for donating the music; all the umpires, especially Duke for volunteering their time all weekend; and most of all, to all the players who sup- ported such a very worthy cause. After all the excitement of the fire, things are very calm and quiet here at Bir- chwood, so maybe our hearts can go back to a more normal beat again. So, until next week, let us all say an extra prayer of thanks to the Man upstairs for his protection. Until next week, then, Cheerio. In the temporary ab- sence of Reeve Ollie Chap- man, Acting Reeve Peter Romanuk prepared a news release which included a list of specific individuals, ' groups, and town shops. "'On behalf of all the residents of Terrace Bay, the Township Council - wishes to publicly express its thanks to all those who assisted during the fire emergency," Romanuk said in the release. Those mentioned in the 'list included Terrace Bay Police Chief Russ Phillips, Fire Chief Ed Stachiw, the members of the town Pol- ice Force and Volunteer Fire Department, the Min- istry of Natural Resources, and Kimberly-Clark of Canada. Others in the list includ- ed the North Shore Ambul- ance Service, Ontario Hydro, CBQ, CFNO, the Township of Schreiber, the Schreiber Volunteer Fire Department, Ken Dooley, Brenda' Harper, and the OPP detachments in Schreiber, Marathon and Nipigon. A number of staffs were also mentioned by Dear Editor: Having attended the Multicultural Workshop in Terrace Bay on Saturday, April 12, I was certainly as surprised as anyone to hear about the financial situation of the Kimberly-Clark mill in Terrace Bay. When things are running along smoothly, we often do not question the cost of services or products, until Romanuk in the release: the Terrace Bay Recreation Centre staff, the Public Works staff, the Terrace Bay Airport staff, the staff , at St. Martin School, the Public School staff, the Lake Superior High School staff, and the Terrace Bay Municipal Office staff. Area companies were also included, ranging from Dave Desrosiers and Son Ltd. and NorCon Con- the closing of an industry in a one industry town. I am sure things and options will get worked out. Nevertheless, it is a good time for trimming the fat. How many taxpayers know what it costs for a year of garbage disposal? Very few, whether in Toronto or Terrace Bay or Manitouwadge. Well, I feel everyone better start finding out and reducing struction to those at Costa's and Trottier Bus Lines. The Nugget Food Store was also mentioned, as were the Women of the Moose and all others who volunteered and assisted in any way. "If anyone has been in- advertendly omitted, we apologize," Romanuk added. the costs either by recycl- ing, reusing, Or reducing. What a waste of money, in every community in Can- ada, where people go hungry. We should all smarten up. Over-packaging by companies adds to the vicious circle.
