Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, February 5, 1986, page 7 Ravens:are people too, Mary says by Mary Hubelit 'Food? What food?" he seems to murmur in her ear (where-ever that is) as they sway side by. side on the jackpine branch. She tenderly strokes his neck with a beak as big as a monkey wrench. With jet- black, loose-fitting feathers they seem out of place in our scenario for lovers, but then we are not ravens. Their companions, the only other pair observed regularly, perch together higher up in the area, balancing gracefully with the strong muscles of their black feet. They are more interested in the daily food supply being tossed onto our garage roof. By the "time N. walks over to the other feeding stations, they have swooped down and stuffed their powerful beaks with pieces of frozen suet. Then away they lift on wide wings to cache the food and eat it at their leisure. It is an awesome sight, when competition flies in from the bush, to see eight or ten of these monsters scrambling, threatening and bluffing for food. I understand their pair- bonding is for life, which for a less aggressive com- petitor might not break any records. However, a study of their social structure is worth the effort, and in- deed may help us all as a lesson against racism. I can readily relate to the frustra- tion of the female if she ar- rives first at their favorite perch and has to wait for her mate -- the stretching of the neck to look around the sky, the nervous nibbl- ing of the nearest needles, the apparently impatient stomping of feet -- I'm sure you know the feeling! Ravens have been with us an incredibly long time. the wind wins, throws them off balance so that they fall in brief disorder, regain control and head in- to the wind again. Predators, yes, but not the only ones. The world of nature and the world of man are full of them ... have. been for centuries and probably will be until one of the human kind pushes the wrong button. But creatures of unique beauty they are, creatures with a lesson for those with eyes to see, and an important part of a healthy eco- system. And I don't have to quote E.A. Poe to prove it! They also go to and fro over bush trails, closely monitoring the hunters' steps and keeping the forest informed with brief, urgent bulletins which I suspect are a commentary on the degree of danger we repre- sent! On a scale of one to ten, I also suspect N. and I rate a one, or two at the most. Have you ever watched ravens playing on the wind? One can spent an ex- hilarating half hour wat- ching from a window, and more if one wants to bun- dle up and go outside. (I - stopped that, though, when I noticed people eyeing me sidelong, and crossing the street as they approached me.) Ravens actually seem to enjoy this rough-and- tumble with a brisk north wind -- they fly straight in- to it and then seem to challenge the blasts as they attempt to wheel, inner pi- nions down, outer pinions up and flared.
