Page 2, Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, December 4, 1985 Anchor by Bill LeGrand - The Face of Death While on holidays last summer I experienced death at first hand ... not the death of a person in hospital or at home, but the death of suddenness on-a lonely stretch of Highway in Quebec. That morning my wife and I had risen at 3:30 a.m. on a Sunday, at motel about 30 miles from Riviere du Loup. Our expectation was to reach Montreal by noontime to visit with my mother. We left in heavy fog, so thick that it obscured all shapes and forms beyond 30 feet. Moments later we saw flashing' lights ... ten cars had been involved in a tragic accident moments before. Getting out of my car I approached the scene. St. John Ambulance people were everywhere with one solitary QPP officer. A truck driver had blocked off the road, strewn with glass, cut tires, mangled cars and assorted bodies. Finding out what I was:a priest, the rescue workers brought me around to talk to various in- jured people. Four times I knealt before corpses, some badly mutilated, to offer a prayer and speak to a friend of the deceased. One young Ontarian, who couldn't speak French, was bleeding profusely. I stared into the eyes of terror ... "Father," he cried, "I'm scared ... I-I don't know what to bellieve. Help me, please." Without any clerical material, I held his hand and whispered, **Believe in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour." His hand tightened on mine, *'I do! I do!" A calmness crossed his face as we said the Lord's Prayer together, and I asked Jesus to receive him as he was in His Mercy. Amidst the confusion and noise, the Holy Spirit affirmed this young man, as he lost consciousness. Within seconds I was off to help others, until several Roman Catholic priests arrived. As the ambulances came into view with police cars, the road was opened, the injured and dying were transported to Riviere du Loup and Edmunston, and the dead were placed in a special van. Shaking I returned to my car. Moments later we were heading towards Montreal, my heart touched by one young man and others in pain and sorrow. One scriptual passage remained in my mind as we travelled. In Romans 8:38-39 (rsv) Paul declared without qualification ... 'For I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor power, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creations, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord." To this day, I remember that accident and the peace which entered a young man. In the face of death, God's love and peace enfolds and comforts us. are proud to announce the safe arrival of their first child Dr. Wilkes and the nurses of McCausland.
